Hi,
I've been trying to use the Render to Audiofile option.
I can save as a wave file.
Ican save as a WMA file,
but when I try and save as MP3
the pop up box for MP3 appears,
I press oK
I get message " converting render"
"Save as MP3"

"Driver cannot do requested conversion"

Any ideas??

Stombbx is set to compatibility Windows XP vers 2. & I've also tried changing UAC settings to off

( something I read thru earlier posts)

I'm running Win 7 Home Edition. BIAB 2011 313

I save as the wav file...Then use Audacity.
Load int the wav file, maybe tweek it a little bit.

lame encoder file has to be installed to save as mp3.
Its in the Audacity software pages.
Google Audacity if you dont have it. Handy free program.

Good luck,

Seeker

I save as a .wav and right click...use "open with..." dialog to open with iTunes...right click on the .wav file in iTunes and convert to mp3...works fine...

Is there a problem with "save as an mp3" button in BIAB or is it working and I have just missed a step?

I don't have Windows 7 but I assume it is a MP3 codec issue. This link may help.

Thanks Rachel,
I'm guessing that may well be the problem with my Win7. I'll read up on it & see how I go.
Thank You

It sounds like Microsoft has NOT included an mp3 codec as they don't support it.

They could have included an error messages that says that, but no, they just want you to use their audio versions.

They have a new somewhat devious thing that has happened to 4 people I know so far. It happens in steps. They get a message that their version of windows may not be authentic.

Then at the next update the drivers for their 3rd party sound cards get disabled. Nothing will we could do would get it to work.

At the end of the day, I shrug my shoulders and say to one guy, 'well your computer is 5 years old', you got it from "some guy", who gave you a 'great deal'. Call him up for support. Right.

But not putting the right message in their software to say they don't support it seems a tad sneaky.

Hi,

If you get a "Driver cannot do requested conversion" error when trying to encode an MP3 file, this suggests that your computer does not have an ACM (Audio Compression Manager) compatible MP3 codec installed. Band-in-a-Box uses the Windows Audio Compression Manager functions to compress files. The types of files and bitrates that Band-in-a-Box can encode depends on the codecs you have installed on your computer.

On Windows XP, you can check to see if you have an MP3 codec by going to Control Panel | Sounds and Audio Devices | Hardware | Audio Codecs (Properties) | Properties. On Windows Vista/7, try going to Help | About | Technical Support Information in Windows Media Player. Look to see if there is an "MPEG Layer-3" codec listed there.

Also (on Windows XP), select it, click on Properties, and check to see that it isn't a "decode-only" codec. If you don't see an MP3 codec there, or if it is a decode-only codec, Band-in-a-Box won't be able to encode MP3s.

Due to licensing restrictions and patents on MP3 technology, we can't include MP3 codecs with our software. Possible solutions -- #1 (has lots of "maybe's") -- The latest version of Windows Media Player may include an ACM-compatible MP3 codec, l3codecp.acm. You might find this file in your Windows\System32 directory, and it might be able to encode MP3's at high bitrates. This codec may not be enabled on your computer. -- #2 -- Search online for an MP3 codec that you can download and install. Or, (3) Save your file as a stereo wave file and do the conversion from wave to MP3 in a third party program.

Hi Andrew,
thank you for trying to help.
I'm running Win7 64 bit?.
( sorry I'm not all that computer literate)
I checked system 32 directory & I did find

" ACM-compatible MP3 codec, l3codecp.acm. "

but alas it still won't work.

My new win7 laptop, has had issues that I hadn't encountered in my old XP laptop.
Anyway, not worry, if I have to use 3rd party software, so be it.

Thank You for trying to help

Rikki, the LAME encoder is better in audio quality anyway.

The Audacity homepage has a place where you can just download and install LAME encoder and not the Audacity program if you like. I would recommend downloading and installing both anyway, as Audacity is very handy program to have. Both are free.

I use Audacity for making mp3 files most of the time as it also has the ability to add all that imbedded data such as copyright, artist, etc. - it also gives me a chance to do a bit of heads and tails editing of the audio .wav file at the same time, clipping off the stick taps at the beginning, also the "Amplify" plugin can be very handey and it is fairly automatic in settings, good way to get that volume "up to snuff" before saving as mp3.

The reason the LAME encoder now sounds better is that Fraunhofer stopped development of their mp3 codecs some time back but the LAME project kept right on working on things. Or at least, that's the scuttlebutt I've read on the web about the issue. All I know is that I did some A/B comparisons and to my ears I settled on the LAME encoder over any others available at the time.

Thank you Mac & Seeker,
I downloaded Audacity & Lame, so far so good.
I tried a quick wav to mp3 conversion, fingers crossed, it appears to be working ok.

So thank you.
