I actually love CA. She has an incredible voice. And I watched the game - but missed the opening performance. So while I have not even listened to the replays (will have to do that later) I can only state that "Sh## Happens", No big deal!

Now that Frank Drummand piece is indeed funny!! She didn't sound anything like that, did she?

It ain't about the singin' - it is about the fee paid for the gig - one song that *everybody* who is a citizen of this nation should *know* - and chokin' the lyrics.

Forget the patriotic thang, as gigging musicians who make a lot less $$ than what was paid for that level of weak performance, we should protest.

See, at that level, the paid performer should not be chokin' on the lyrics of such an important piece as our national anthem.

If they lower the bar one more notch we will have to dig a tunnel to get under the damn thing.

What Mac said. I understand Ms. Aguilera is considered to be an attractive female human, and an entertainer of some sort. If she can't handle the National Anthem at the Super Bowl, they should just license the recording of Hendrix doin' it.

Lame, lame, lame.

I know it's a hard piece to sing, but the lyrics arent't that tough. I understand they were even up on the big monitor screen. And she's been in front of big crowds plenty of times.

I'm puzzled as to why we infuse sports events with patriotic propaganda, but that's another discussion. If you're gonna sing, learn the words!

In my humble opinion, she butchered the song just as much by her excessive vocal gymnastics as by forgetting the lyrics.

While watching CA attempt this song, I was reminded of this performance of almost equal class and competence.

I didn't watch her performance, but I've witnessed many big-name ego-driven singers treat the anthem as if it were some blues tune they were auditioning American Idol with. Drives me crazy. Just sing the damned song.

This is precisely why I hit the MUTE button at the beginning of sports events.

However that being said, I watched a hockey game Sat night (LA at Calgary). A country/western singer sang both the Canadian and American anthems. I was going to cringe or hit the MUTE, but listened in spite of myself.

He (George Canyon) sang both anthems with the respect and dignity they deserve, he didn't try to be the show, and he gained my respect (and I'm not particularly into country).

It was refreshing and inspiring.

I caught the first few words of the "butchering" at the SB, and hit the MUTE (and was thankful she didn't sing our anthem). As usual, celebrities are disgusting - even if they remember the words.

My favourite definition: Celebrity - someone who is famous for being famous.

I agree with the posts above, you should know the anthem 'cold' if you are going to perform it anywhere, let alone the superbowl....

I also think an 'anthem singer' should be aware that others are singing along, so they should at least sing it in tempo, and stick to the melody. It is painful to watch 'regular folks' trying to follow and sing along with someone who is singing some unique interpretation....

I am surpised that CA got tripped up on the lyrics since she's sang the anthem hundreds of times.

A snipet from an article:

Quote:

After 'The Star-Spangled Banner' wrapped, Aguilera headed backstage where a source tells me that the singer was "devastated." She knows she messed up big time. It's an honor to be asked, and she let America and herself down. She didn't want anyone around her. Everyone was telling her she was great, but she knows the truth, says the source.

Update: Aguilera has addressed her performance in a statement to the Associated Press. "I got so caught up in the moment of the song that I lost my place. I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and that the true spirit of its anthem still came through," she said.

And for what THEY get paid, football players still often can't catch and drop the ball...

Just sayin...

At least we know she didn't lip-sync it.

I'm not a big CA fan, but stuff happens. It's much easier to be the Monday morning quarterback, isn't it?

Now, I'll agree that the vocal gymnastics distract, but the organizers of the event knew that would happen when they hired her, so lay that blame there.

All they had to say was, "You want your bazillion dollars to sing it, then sing it straight! Lots of other folks would be honored to do that."

I don't know about you guys, but I've definitely screwed up in live performance situations before. And it didn't have anything to do with how much or how little I was being paid, or even my degree of preparation.

I'm not a fan of the vocal gymnastics CA uses on the song, but the simple fact is that she screwed up, like all of us do.

Does anyone really think CA wanted to screw up one of her favorite songs to sing, on top of singing in front of the largest audience she's ever had? Especially since she's sang it at countless games before ever since she was a little girl?

There's no doubt in my mind she feels terrible about what happened. There's also no doubt it's being blown way out of proportion.

For the record, I've never owned a single CA CD and I don't have a single song of hers on my hard drive, so you really can't call me a fan of hers. I do have 2 or 3 of her songs bookmarked on YouTube, but that's the extent of me being part of her fanbase.

What's the old proverb, ... "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone", ... or should we say "Let he who has never screwed up in a live performance" ... ?

Once before a band gig I inadventently used a tuner which had been set to a full step low, to tune my guitar. When I hit the first chord on the opening song I knew something was horribly wrong, so I tried the second chord, OMG! it was like I was naked on the stage. Every string was a full step low! So I guess in a small way I know how she felt. .

I did finally listen to the performance. To me - like I said above, no big thing. This is just the stuff YouTube was made for. Not like she muffed the verse and ran off the stage crying. Now that would have given us somethign to talk about.

I agree. Much to do about nothing. Now here’s a clip of 11 yr. old Christina nailing the National Anthem at a hockey game without the vocal gymnastics:

She obviously knows the song. She made a mistake Sunday. Give the girl a break.

I was playing in my first flatpicking contest at the behest of a friend who was the former National Flatpicking Champion, and both of us had made it into the finals on “day two” of the contest. So had several state champions from the East coast.

We each had 2 songs of our choosing to play for the final round, and I “nailed” my first song. I also “nailed” the first 2 verses of 4 of my second song when I noticed someone in the audience of about 500 or 600 that I thought was an old friend. That moment of distraction caused me to forget my planned last 2 solos, but I never lost a beat. I launched into an improvisation of the last 2 solos or breaks.

I screwed up, …… but I won first place. I got away with my mistake, and nobody except my rhythm player knew I’d “diverted” from what I planned to play.

Unfortunately for Christina, everyone knew the words and realized she'd messed up ONE LINE!

The fact that she sang it well at age eleven makes the situation worse.

--And it is not a question of, "have you ever choked onstage" either.

It is a question of, "have you ever choked the anthem at the superbowl?"

So she's devastated.

Maybe she shouldn't have taken the gig so lightly and perhaps done a bit more practice/rehearsal for it?

This year's Superbowl, the ads cost $3 MILLION per 30-second spot.

What do you think she got paid to sing one song there?

If she *really* wants to show us how devastated she really is, she should give the money back.

She could afford it, heck, I heard she charge one million bucks to sing one party.

For that kinda pay I guarantee that the last thing I'd do is choke on the gig, man.

Well, for that kinda pay I'd stick around after playin' the wedding and paint the house for the parents.

And take out the trash...

Excellence.

I remember her well.
