I would hope that this was the bands “ Final Countdown ”!
Back in my day the only time we started panic buying was when the bartender shouted "last call"!

Mario,
The lack of an audience sort of says it all.

They wouldn't sound so bad if they dropped the tone-deaf singer.

I've heard bands that sounded worse . Once at an audition the other guitarist in my band had a tooth pulled and was on pain meds when he tuned his guitar 1/2 step off. It was the biggest train wreck ever , me and the bass player tuned up to him in the first song . The singer was so lost it was like Ashley Simpson on Saturday Night Live when her karaoke machine broke . Someone told me later it sounded like Captain Beefheart on a drunken-drug binge . We still got the gig so I guess we weren't the worst band out of 4 there that night.

One video shows singer out of tune and the other the band is out of tune. Perhaps they should swap singers? lol

Yes, it's painful. But kind of funny in a very twisted way.

That can't be for real? Certinly Eddie has a guitar tech with him and they would have done a very quick switch. Looks to me like some monkey business with the tape and youtube.

Oh its absolutely for real. There's lots of discussion about the various possible reasons. Some speculate that eddie continued on to spite the guitar tech.

Most think the MIDI was set to the wrong keysig.
I think that they played back a digital audio file that was recorded at say, 44.1KHz but somehow played it back at 48KHz. Or vice verse.

Several interesting things about the Van Halen thing:
1. Way back in the day, I remember when Jump! came out - Eddie was getting bored playing the geetar and he often played the signature keyboard parts of this song, both the chords and the arps, on keyboard. People had thought he had lost his way, etc. I think the original MTV video for the song shows Eddie laying down the chords on keys. Then he switches over to the tapping guitar solo, but he also plays the o.k. keyboard synth solo as well in the video back a long time ago.
2. Eddie plays some songs with the guitar tuned down to Eb (not uncommon). Lots of speculation that a guitar tech handed a wrongly tuned guitar to Eddie. This is quite likely, since the bass guitar part is not out of tune with said backing recording or MIDI data. If there was a MIDI key signature/tuning issue or a sample playback issue, then the bass would also be out of tune with the keys. To my ear (last time I paid attention to listening through the whole mess), I seem to recall the bass being in tune with the keys - pointing to the guitar being out of tune all by it's lonesome. Someone with some fancy FFT software could actually sort this - if it really mattered to anyone.
3. If it wasn't a youtube video, and recorded like alot of early VH records were mixed, it would be really easy to FFT the thing - The early VH records almost always had Eddie's guitar panned hard to one side (can't remember which), even when it really wasn't a channel shortage issue at the studio. It was almost like trying to make live records sound like a concert experience in the first 10-20 rows on the main floor.
Lastly, just thinking back to some of those 'real' VH hits - it's really too bad that David Lee Roth whacked out and the whole drunkenness and debauchery of the band shot themselves in the feet. They were a GREAT rock band in their heyday. Some inventive musicianship, lot's of stage presence with flash and bang with Davids vocals and athleticism, a tight 4 piece, undeniably great hooks, etc. Too bad they couldn't keep it together. I wonder what they would be cranking out today?
I wasn't really allowed to listen to them - and I understand why. Lyrics clearly not in line with my morals. But man, some GIANT sounds in some of those nasty songs. "Runnin' With The Devil"; while absolutely against my moral fiber - sounds incredibly tasty to my ears. I think the chord phrasing that Eddie uses in the chordal hook of that song ranks in the top 5 of all time giant rock guitar triumphantness (I know, not a word).

In this much talked about Van Halen video, you can clearly hear it's only Eddie who is out of tune. I agree, a quick guitar switch could have been done. He looked like he was enjoying the mess he was making.
After the original band fired David Lee Roth, Roth went on sounding great as a solo artist. The saddest thing this was Eddie's drug use. He's been in and out of rehab and even had thraot cancer and still refused to admit he's ever had a problem.
I saw a press conference when David Lee Roth and Eddie Van Halen got back together and Eddie couldn't even speak. And it wasn't his throat injury. He was wrecked out of his mind. I watched him looking so lost. It was very sad. I do wish him the best and hope his habits don't rub off on his son.
