Being in a brass band has its moments. We were to do a joint concert with a youth swing band. We were playing around fifteen pieces, some quite long, but I think perhaps seven in the first half and eight in the second.
We sat at the back of the hall while the junior swing band played, then with the ultimate of decorum moved forward to the back stage door, and under a pre arranged order we each went to our seats. The stands had been set up with the sheet music for each player, so all we had to do was sit down, pick up our instrument, check the first piece was the right one and wait for the conductor and his baton.
Unfortunately, as I sat down, my foot caught the leg of the stand, over it tipped and fifteen sheets of paper music sailed off in all directions. I got some murderous looks from the rest of the band and conductor, as those sheets were hurriedly collected and passed back, no longer in the correct order either of course. I guess I was as red as a traffic light on stop.
Fortunately, I quickly found the first piece and then managed to sort the rest out while the baton waver described the next piece.
Strangely enough the rest of the set went well and was possibly one of the best concerts I have played in.

This is a funny AFTER the gig story. When my band was playing in Sault Ste Marie, we met a bunch of guys who played on a rugby team. If anybody knows any rugby players, I could probably stop right here, but I will continue anyway.

After the gig I made a really wise choice and decided to go out and drink with these guys. Their drink of choice was something they called "Gasoline", which was a juice glass of half Jack Daniels and half Tequila. Trust me, it was aptly named.....

Factor in the male ego and the macho that goes with it, I tried to hang with these guys, the smallest of which was about 6'4" and a well toned 240 pounds.

I woke up in a parking lot the next day at 1pm, sleeping in my car, with a note telling me where they hid my keys. AND THEN... I am not from that town. I had NO IDEA where I was. I started driving until I found somebody I could ask which way the east gate of the border was because that is where we were staying. Oh man, I get a headache just thinking about it and that was 24 years ago!!

Several years back, I was working regularly with a 5-piece group in the Memphis area. We had a large dinner/dance booked at nice motel for folks from several states around. The evening progressed normally with good food and dancing. At gig's end, the man in charge asked to use the microphone. Then is when we discovered the purpose of the meeting----a swinger's get-together! That was quickly evident when he described the various activites to follow (member's choice), including the swimming pool. We thanked them for the gig, collected payment, then left for home and our spouses, except for the drummer who was exceedingly curious and a little kinky. He said, later, that things really got interesting as the evening progressed---very educational to say the least. He said the group participatory activities were the most creative and interesting to observe.

I was playing at a new years eve dance at one of the local hotels. I had regular gigs there for about 8 years. Right at the start of the evening I was moving my chair to get comfy. I was right at the back of the stage although I never realised how far back I was. The leg of the chair slipped off the stage with me in it. Fortunately, there were VERY heavy curtains draped over the windows and they held mmy weight and saved me from a more serious event. Talk about embarrasing

Ahhhh Maaaaan... you just reminded me of another one! I can't really tell it because it would be politically incorrect. I'll just say that it should have tipped us off when we arrived at the gig location, we were greeted by one of those little sliding portals in the the door that questionable clubs use to make sure its not the vice squad before they open the door.

It went downhill from there. It was the only gig I ever played at where I was afraid I might not get out alive.

This is not funny, but bizarre:

Many years ago I was playing a bar on the south side of Chicago. On a break, a guy walked up to me and introduced himself. He looked like a biker and also looked and sounded really out of it. During the next set, there was a commotion near the front door. The club owner was kicking this same guy out for some reason. A few minutes later, the guy comes back and shoots and kills the bar owner! End of owner, end of gig, and of course, we didn't get paid.
