It does appear that there isn't a special price for upgrading from 2011 to 2011.5.
Thanks for pointing that out, I hadn't noticed that. There was a special price until the summer special ended a few weeks ago.

We will introduce a 2011 to 2011.5 upgrade price in the next few days.

Sorry about that!

Enjoy Cowichan Lake, it's a beautiful place!

Have Fun!

There you go! From the big man himself. Of course, by the time the new place is built and he actually has an address to send the upgrade to, 2012 will probably be out.

Peter,
As Kent has explained to me last night, since there isn't an upgrade path, it may just be as easy to wait until 2012 comes out at this point, and pay a bit higher price and go directly from 2011 to 2012, and honestly, that's not a big deal. Might cost me a bit more, but, I may also be saving some money in the long run.

As to the OP, he's the one moving to Lake Cowichan, I'm just going to stay here on the Kitsap Peninsula about 100 miles south of you.

Thank you for making such a great product.

Bob, if that day comes when people's avatar does look like this, then I'm going to go back to a regular picture of me. I did this because I haven't found anyone else who has.

Gary

I'm thinking that the day is not too far off when we will see QR code embedded in a picture.

Time will tell...

It doesn't have to be very big already, I think it'll be found in the corner of every brand's logo soon enough. Not sure if that's what you meant by embedded, or if you meant it would be hidden in the image somehow.

Yep, hidden in the pixels.

I can think of several possible ways to do that offhand, but you know how programming goes, the obvious path is usually not the one that yields the fruit...

I'll be content to comment on the QR code in Gary's avatar. Cool use of technology. If you don't know what I'm talking about, get one of the smartphone scanners and scan it. Gary, nice cat on the SONY.

Ok, I'll bite. Why would I want to buy yet another gadget and use it with my smartphone?

I'll admit I don't have the imagination to see where tech is going. I had a good friend who was a total geek back in the 80's who told me about this new company named Microsoft and I should buy some stock. I read a bit about it and couldn't see what the advantage was. My bad.

Anyway this QR code links to a webpage, but you need a scanner to read it? Where's the big deal there?

It's not an add-on gadget; it's just an app. There are many 'shopper' type apps that are either free or .99 in the Apple appstore that can read these codes. I assume it must be similar for other smartphones. I would not buy a smartphone just for this, but if you already own one, it's just another small convenience available to you.

You see an ad you like. Say "Half off everything you can eat at Ed's!"

Where is Ed's?
What kinda food does he have?

With that little image your phone takes a picture (and scans it) which links to a webpage. Now you probably can find the answers for the above questions (if done right) and also go to another website and check reviews of Ed's place. It's instant info, and can be printed on anything from a newspaper to billbaord to a Google map page, ready to scan.. No longer necessary to use half an ad space for contact info, just a little block. .. and yeah I think it's where we're headed. That's why I have already set some up for clients, and they don't even know it yet. Don't wanna be late for the curtain (when the client realizes he wants one). I'll be using them pretty soon, I'm sure.

Bob,
The QR scanner is available to any smartphone that has a camera. In this particular case, it just goes to a website that I created specifically for those people who know what they're looking at. They get to see a couple of pictures of me, my cat, and find out a few facts about me.

However, QR codes, also known as 2D Barcodes, are showing in magazine advertisements, and when you scan them, your smartphone will open up a browser, and take you to a page that has more available content on the product you're looking at, i.e., videos, more detailed pictures, sounds, etc. It's an additional advertising lane, for all intents and purposes. I just thought it was unique way to have an avatar.

If you have a smart phone you may already have a free barcode scanner, if not, look in your App Store or Marketplace. My phone is Android based, I use Red Laser scanner.

One thing I find interesting is that Gary must have reduced the size of his, to meet PG Music avatar size requirements of 80 x 80 pixels max, yet it still works. I wonder how small it can be and still be scanned.

They can be pretty small. I just put one on a coupon at 76 X 76 and it still worked. May depend on graphics program used to resize (?)

Here is one of my sites.
It has Live demo's and explanations of the
whole QR code applications.

And links to sites with QR Apps/readers for
many smartphones..

As far as the size, think quite a bit
depends on content.

Jeesh, now I really do sound like an old fart. I have the HTC Incredible, my camera can act as a scanner?? I had no idea, I mean who has time to play with and test all these apps? I still have a full time job as a tax specialist plus my lady plus my music plus my daughters, plus my car just died this morning, had to tow it, probably the fuel pump. Same basic routine as all you guys I'm sure. Where's the time to hear about these smartphone apps, set up, play with to see if it's useful or not, etc?? I did try the GPS on my phone, it works ok but I never use it because I've lived around here over 30 years, don't need no stinkin GPS. I get a kick out of some idiots who get so used to following the GPS voice directions they wind up turning up a blind alley or into a drainage ditch or whatever else that's not a street.
