I have V2009.5, running under XP SP3 with plenty of memory. Today I loaded two songs, recorded some choruses. Printed one song, opened another song, and then went back to print another copy of the song I printed. When the print dialog came up, the app crashed. There were no other BIAB dialogs. The screen looked like this:  Any tips to avoid this crash? Thanks, Al

When you re-installed 2009.5, did you also update it to the latest build? According to the Support site, the latest build for 2009.5 is #288. When I read your post, it sounds like you had multiple instances of BIAB open. Is this correct or did you only have a single instance open and then open each song individiually?

This isn't good enough Al. Any time you're having computer problems you have to give us specific details about your system not just XP3 with "plenty of memory". Brand name, CPU, RAM, hard drive size, how full is the drive, the last time you ran Windows updates, defragged, all that stuff. Then on the programs/software side what drivers are you using, in this case your print drivers, for Biab, what midi drivers, are you using MME or ASIO, external devices, exactly what did you do just before the crash, don't just say I tried to close the program, that won't cut it. It's like asking your doctor "Doc I have a pain in my side what can you do for me?" and that's it. Nothing about what did you do before the pain, shoot yourself, fall out of a tree, eat some bad fish or what?

It's particularly necessary to get all the details because of the history here. Al had unusual problems before, and upgraded to version 2012 where the unusual problems did not go away, then reverted.

Thanks for the help. Here's a tip for the developers, when you display system info in the about box, make the text selectable so that it can be copied and pasted into a post or email instead of having to do a screen capture.  Yes, I have build 288. I didn't have multiple instances open -- the things I referred to were done consecutively. I'd uninstall and reinstall, but I worry about hassles in getting all the settings the way I want them, and that could be more trouble than dealing with the crashes. But I take it, at least, that this isn't a common problem with a known solution.

Al. Your disk appears to be nearly full. 58GB, 7GB free. Windows uses 10% by default for swap files. Thats 5.8GB. If those figures are correct that's your problem. It would also explain some of the other issues you were having and the fact the upgrade to 2012 didn't improve things.
You need to free up some space. Try cleaning your drive, deleting unused programs and defrag. You might find that cures all your problems.

Thanks. I think that 7 GB free is after the swap file usage. I have a 3.8 Meg swap file. I sure think that 7 Gigs free is plenty. Of course, I started programming on computers with 64 K of memory and tape drives.

Maybe, I always thought the swap file was hidden from apps asking for disk space. Either way that's still really full. Between memory swaps and BiaB disk access I'm betting you've got a lot of disk thrashing going on. And I'd also bet the drive is really fragmented as there's little space to write files.
I'd still seriously consider a good cleanup and defrag. That's been reported to cure some strange BiaB issues in the past.
BTW, while your system should run BiaB for the most part, you are on the low end of system requirements. That means even more reliance on disk swapping, memory paging etc. All the more reason to free some space. Maybe you can offload some programs to a portable USB drive, they're really cheap these days.

So it's a Pentium 1.7 with 2 gigs of ram I guess. That should be ok and I agree 7 gigs free space is a bit light but still ok. I was running that on my old machine for some time. I did clean it up to maybe 20 gigs free and it didn't improve things much. Your system is a bit old and slow but it should run these programs ok as long as you don't have it doing too much at once. Do us one small favor though. Don't post suggestions to the developers and tell everybody how much you know about PC's and programming. We've all been there and done that. Your background means squat with these highly specialized music production programs. Look up forum member Eddie1261. He probably knows more about PC's than you do yet it got him off on all kinds of irrevelant tangents because he had no experience with this stuff and thought his PC tech experience was somehow relevant. He has it dialed in pretty good now though because he stuck with it and listened to us with good humor and no attitude. That plus some talk of a weekend beer party.  We're here to help you and happy to do it. We still need the other details I talked about earlier. Tell us about your Biab config, midi drivers, what synth, are you using all midi, all Real Tracks, both? That kind of thing. Just the facts. Bob

Could you do this before? (i.e., print songs back to back)?
Reason I ask is because the PRINT driver and some of the useless "bloat ware -let us help you print files" software and various TSR utilities (kicked off when you FIRST call up a print job) could eat up memory and cause "issues" (especially HP stuff, and I use only HP's at home because I get good deals on their printers and until this CY I got reimbursement from my company for HP ink)
BUT I also agree with pwarren - your HDD is "out o' space" - time to clean up, swap out for larger HDD, or add another or at least a USB drive.
Just my 1 cent - however, I do hope you get it figured out

I had to put down my dog yesterday so today I took off work and was reminiscing but also trying to keep mind off of it - but your comment about 64K machines got me thinking:
A lot of us probably cut our teeth on older 4k, 16k, 32K and 64K machines. My first home project was an Altair 8800 kit (I was an AF SSgt at the time and my wife was SOOOOOooooo pissed at me for spending "a fortune" on something so dumb and useless). Next ~ late '78 or '79 was the an Apple II hooked up to my color TV (saw it advertised on back of one of my Scientific American's [long before they went all science as a hand maiden of politics]) - again the wife didn't understand!.
Then around 1981'ish (by now I'm an Lt) dumped Apple for a Radio Shack Color Computer with only 32K (aka CoCo). I liked the Motorola 6809 better than the MOS 6502 of Apple and a few other perks ( better Basic, better ability to actually get at the machine - had more actual control of machine) .
I do regret not giving the Atari (which was AMAZING) and few others a go but money only stretched so far for even for an ex-SSgt Lt. I actually wrote my AFIT Masters thesis on that Coco (after doing a "homebrew" upgrade to 64K - after all I was now a Lt. and could afford those kind of extravagancies :-) but could not quit afford an Osborne or similar (I was still paying off SSgt debts - and I still had to have my guitars and amps!). That CoCo was last non-PC (aka not-Apple) computer.

7GB is a bit tight if the drive isn't horribly fragmented. But if it is, and it probably is, considering how little space is available, it's more than a little tight. I'd personally bet this is responsible for at least some of his problems. Also, consider the machine is a little old and underpowered anyway, then add a lot of disk accesses and you've got trouble.

Absolutely.
My advice is to do whatever it takes to free up a bit more free space on that hard drive, ~10% free space is the bare minimum, try for at least 15% and then run a defrag on the disk. Likely should run defrag overnight as it will presumably take a long time even then.
Too many fragments can cause timing errors, especially when doing something like print routines.

it's a 60 gig drive so 10-15% is what again? Before I decided to buy a new box I really spent some effort cleaning up my old P4 2 gig, took the 80 gig HD from 8 or 10 gigs free space all the way up to about 40 gigs, uninstalled a bunch of crap I was no longer using and I was very surprised to see little or no improvement. One thing I'm always careful of is to do regular defrags and Spybot scans. That Geekbench thing said I should get 1400 and I actually got 1410. That's when I realized I was simply running at the limits of the hardware. Even though it was running fine I was tired of waiting 30-45 seconds to generate 5 Real Tracks so it was time for a new box. The new box tests out at 5400. Huge difference in speed for this stuff. Bob
