I insert notes on the third space (C in treble clef) at every quarter beat on the Melody or Soloist track, whichever is empty and then assign a Velocity value of 1 for each note. That makes a note that can barely be heard at all.

When doing a song that has an intro like that, I make sure to set BB to the Notation View, and after hitting Play and having the Countin, which is set to Silent, I get the Note Highlighting feature as a silent metronome. I practice counting and playing/singing along with that until I've got it down, the audience gets the illusion that the band was sitting out and came in when supposed to come in, only I know what's going on in the background.

Another method might be more suitable if your wanting a Rubato intro where the time can vary intentionally. Try using the BB Conductor feature to kick the song off at the appointed bar. For guitarists, this would work easier using USB programmable footpedal.
