More than just Windows Media Player gets installed when you install the WMP.
I'm thinking that what was really needed was an updated DirectX, which installing the WMP will do. Matter of fact, might be the easiest way to update DirectX these days.
Start --> Run and type in "dxdiag.exe" without the quotes, hit Enter and you should be able to view your DX version. DX ver 9.0c or higher is good.
