For some time now i have been hearing a very strange sound intermittenly in my song files. The only way to discribe it is as a cricket like sound. when the song file (several do this) plays every now and again this little subtle cricketish sound is heard.

I have several therories.

1. it is a plug in, but hhmmm wait i happens on new song files that have no plugins

2. it is midi based, hhhmmm how? midi makes no sounds unless they are thru a synth. I have heard it when using more than one synth.

3. it is in my speakers (monitors) mmmmm maybe, but that is not likely since i hear it in the headphones as well.

4. in the sound card, still i hear it with both the m-audio card and the Tascam interface.

5. In the computer, well maybe, but again i heard it in the last computer and also in this new one. Although, I am using the same secondary hard drive to run the program.

6. Maybe it is in RB, as I only hear it in RB. Could it be back to a plugin that is not registered?

Very curious i think. Any thoughts from the folks here on this forum would be helpful.

Any chance it's a mechanical sound? Bad fan bearing or squeaky DVD player?

If you have ever heard it when audio is not playing, that's a possibility.

Welcome to my world! Crickets I can't hear, but clicking, wet clicking, spurious sounds, and whining, all part of every minute of every day. I can stop whining now I guess. Sigh.

I'd like someone to take that, and another the buying legs and feet, and the crawling bugs all over me for an hour or two. I'm more than tired of it.

Rob,

It sounds like some software might have gone beyond the trial stage and this sound is what's produced when the software needs registering. For example, Coyote Forte produces an intermittent sound once it's passed it's 30 day trial.

Just a thought,
Noel

"sounds like a bug" Okay that one was really funny, and suprisingly caught me off guard.

Noel that was my first thought, but the only coyote i have is the WT version that comes with PG products.

Maybe one of the amplitude offerings?

Could it be:

Buffer overload in your soundcards drivers?

Distortions do to track(s) volume?

Interference caused by some close wireless device like phone, modem?

IRQ sharing problem?

Some programs running in the background like antivirus?

Does it happen in the stand-a-lone version of Amplitude 3?

You said you only hear it in RB so it does not happen in any other audio program like BiaB, YouTube, CD playing?

Have you checked any of the above? Tracing down intermittent problems like this can be extremely frustrating but I’m sure with all the help from this forum the problem will be found.

Life is short so make sure you spend as much time as possible on the Internet arguing with strangers.

Does it always occur at the same places in the songs? If not it just might be tinnitus... I sincerely hope not. Actually, if it does occur in the same places it might still be tinnitus - triggered by a particular frequency in the playback

Crickets on a recording sounds like a job for Mad Man Mancuso.

Okay where to start. No i do not hear it in any other programs, just RB.

I do not use Amplitude, and should just delete it.

Buffer overload, hhhmmm most likely not since i heard it on two separate sound cards.

Maybe antivirus, will turn it off and see. But i kind of remember it when i did not ahve antivirus setup.

IRQ maybe will dig into that one.

It does not ahppen often or at the same place in a song. Sometimes i can play the song, and stop and go back and it will not do it.

There is a wireless modem and phone nearby

Hi Rob.

Mario has a good point - we've seen problems like this which were as a result of mobile phones. We always tell people to remove their phones from their pocket when playing electric guitar, especially single coil types.

We've also come across a problem exactly like yours which appeared to be some kind of conflict between ASIO drivers and VIA on-board audio. Disabling the VIA solved the problem. Why this should happen is not clear, but we've since heard of other identical cases. It only seems to happen with VIA, not Realtek.

ROG.

Catching a recording of the offending sound and loading up to some file sharing site, placing the URL on this forum, would make it a lot easier to troubleshoot.

Very wierd I can play the song and hear the sound, and stop and play it back at the sam elocation and nothing. I am beginning to think it is related to digital overload as was mentioned above, and have begun to go thru each song and mixing it a bit cooler, and then hopefully that will solve the issue. Mac i would love to record itbut never know when it will happen. What i might try today it to fire up the song and try to record a whole song, and see if i capture the sound.

You can look at the waveform and see if it is an overload.

That is doubtful because a printed overload would happen at the same exact spot everytime, plus, we haven't really had a problem with overload since the advent of the 32-bit audio engine.

This is then likely to be an Interrupt Problem, a Resource Issue or a Driver Issue.

First thing I'd try is updating of Sound Device drivers, obtained only from the original mfr's website support, never from some mirror site where you don't know for sure what you're getting.

If that didn't do the trick, then the second thing I always go for with problems of burst noise, zipper noise, "cricket" etc. at random times, is, believe it or not, the Mouse or Touchpad drivers.

If you visit the mfr's website and see that there are newer drivers posted for your devices, by all means try the newer drivers. Often are just like the BB updates, solving problems once released into the field and reports come flooding in from users. And besides that, rollback these days is rather siple and easy if for any reason a driver update should cause more or other probs, which IME is a rare situation anyway.

Rob,

When you say ...
Quote:

Very weird I can play the song and hear the sound, and stop and play it back at the same location and nothing.

... this behaviour would still hold with a software registration issue because such reminder events as unwanted noises are usually timed (e.g. every 30 secs or 5 mins, etc.) and are not location dependent.

If this was my problem, what I'd do is to solo individual tracks and and listen to each one in its entirety. I'd work through the entire song like this, one track at a time. Hopefully, this would allow me to isolate the problem to a track. Once that's done, I'd look at that track and see what might potentially be causing the issue. I'd then grab a second song that has the same problem and, again, see if I could isolate the problem to an individual track. I'd then compare the tracks from the two songs and look for similarities (in settings, soft synths, etc.) that might shed some light on what's happening.

Regards,
Noel

Very interesting afternoon. I went back and visited my old M-Audio 24/96 PCI card. It was not outputting signal. After a close inspection i found that somehow i had changed a setting in it. and after doing a complete setup on the card, i was able to get it working again. Guess what, all me issues seemd to vanish except the cricket thing. And i think that seems to be coming from My voiceworks, or at least that channel. As i heard it while RB was not running. and i was talking to my wife through the mike.

The good thing was that Rb seemed to stablize, and the crashing stopped, and the pops and crackles when a file loaded are gone. Seems tha drivers of the US-800 are not any good, and it seems to upset RB somewhat. I will keep looking at all the suggestions made and see if I can solve the cricket bug, or ..... er ... issue.

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
