My 7 year old computer finally bit the dust so i bought a 3.10 gHz 8 core processor computer with 16 gigs of ram. Since the beginning the onboard audio had computer sounding noises.........i mean like r2d2!! High whistles and clicks, whirling whining noises that change pitch maybe to the fan speeds. So.......blaming the onboard audio i installed a soundblaster audigy card and am expeiencing the same noises. It is unbearable!! My old computer had virtually no background noise. Any suggestions please!! Thanks. -charley

That sounds like fun. Yech.

Have you gone into the BIOS to disable the internal audio? You should not even use that in a machine used for audio when you have a soundcard. And set Windows Sounds to None.

With a Soundblaster I remember that it had a mixer that included "What You Hear". Go into the mixer and make sure there aren't any inputs turned up that should not be up.

If that doesn't help, can you give us info about the rest of your new computer?

Possibly fan(s)? A good fake stethoscope is to CAREFULLY touch a screwdriver tip to the fan(s) while pressing the handle end to your ear. I emphasize CAREFULLY because, in untrained hands, you could accidentally let all the smoke out of your computer (that's technician terminology). That will isolate the bad fan.

Hi Charley,

Are you sure you've plugged the speakers into the correct audio out? It might be that you've plugged into (say) SPDIF by mistake.

Also, if you computer is new, does that mean you are running Windows 8? It might be that there's a driver issue if it is Win 8.

Regards,
Noel

If there is any kind of MIC connected to the thing, make good and sure that the Mic's Playback mixer selection is turned off in the speaker icon's mixer from the tray. This can cause re-amplification of sounds, feedback, etc. - sometimes tapping on the case or mic itself while listening to the speakers can reveal if this is the culprit, you shouldn't hear anything through the speakers or headphones if the Playback settings for the Mic are properly muted.

DRIVERS can be an issue. Even with apparently brand spanking new computers. And it may not be the Sound Drivers at fault. I've seen Mouse Drivers that caused "zipper" and other noises, NIC drivers that caused interrupts of audio, just about every Driver on the computer has the potential to be problematic.

So I always visit the manufacturer's website for that certain computer, find the manufacturer's Support page or Drivers page and download and install any Drivers published there that have a later release date than the ones in the computer at present. This move not only solves many audio interrupt problems in newer machines such as you describe here, but may just solve *other* issues before you have a chance to discover them the hard way. The drivers that were installed back when the new computer was placed into the box and sealed up are likel ancient history by the time you purchase a new computer and take it home. There may have been complaints from users, solved by the issue of driver patches and updates.

Mac, I remember that as being Bill's mantra. Great advice though.

Bill Rule would frequent a forum that Mac and I were on and his stock answer was usually: "drivers, drivers, drivers!"

We had great fun over there, ditent we, Mac?

eh, I don't remember. Speak up, Donny Boy, can hardly hear ye...

What was the question?

Oh, you gotta terminate the Clock down in the taskbar in order to record audio on the PC. Win95 lets the clock generate audio interrupts.

You say what?

Oh. The Rule.

Look, you should overclock that Celery chip if you are gonna run any of them thar newfangled "plugins" okay?

Anyways, them kids are in mah tamatas.

Again.

Thanks for all your posts..........I finally figured it out. My powered speakers we plugged into their own surge suppressor. I replaced it with a new one and 95% of the noise is gone. I can live with that.....................Live and learn!!! -charley
