For some reason I can not get the EMU Proteus VX to "stick" when I try to add it as a VST instrument (free download by the way at www.emu.com) . I click on "Add VST plugin" and it finds the Proteus .dll just fine. It just will not load into the Direct X Plugin window. I am a little new at this this so any help would be appreciated.

Hi Gary C. – No you do not need any Emu hardware to run the free Proteus VX. This works fine in Sonar and it has some very good sounds in it.
Hi Gary N – I tried loading the Proteus VX in BiaB and I couldn’t get it to work properly. I use BiaB as a backing track builder and load the corresponding midi files into Sonar to polish and modify so I’m not an expert on loading VST’s into BiaB. However no matter what I did I could not get it to work in BiaB. For the record I’m using Win XP – SP2 on my 3.2 GHz computer with 2 gigs of ram. Good luck!
I arrived early to a restaurant. The manager asks, "do you mind waiting a bit?" I said no. "Good", he said. "Take these drinks to table 3"

Thanks Mario. I wonder what the hiccup is? Your computer setup is similar to mine. Maybe this is a question for Mr. Gannon.

It has been awhile since I installed that thing, but I seem to recall that it only worked with ASIO drivers, not MME, WDM nor ASIO "wrapper" programs.
I also didn't think it sounded better than the VSC DXi that comes with BIAB.
As for compatability, I think there is a reason that E-MU is now giving the thing away like that...

Good points Mac. For the record I’m using Creative ASIO drivers with my Elite Pro soundcard so ASIO drivers MAY not be the problem. Some of my Sonar VST’s don’t work in BiaB either, but like I said that is a non-issue with me.
I also agree with you that it doesn’t sound that much better than the VSC DXi. It’s just that it has a lot more sounds to choose from, plus it’s free.
I believe the reason E-MU is giving this away is that it is yesterday’s sounds. There is an “update this software” button on the VST. I’m guessing that their game plan is that if you like this you will really love our new softsynth that you can buy.
Gary N, if you are looking for a good GM sound set then the VSC-DXi is where to start. You already have this as it comes with BiaB. If you haven’t installed it yet now may be the time. It’s on the CD. If you are looking to add more sounds then you should be using either RealBand (if you just purchased BiaB then RealBand was probably included in your purchase), PowerTracks Pro Audio or any other sequencer along with the VX. You can use any number of outside sound sources with these, i.e. BiaB is limited to one outside sound source. However I’m not sure the VX is compatible with RealBand or PowerTracks. You will have to check that out.
Have fun!

Thanks to all. Maybe I should tell you what I am trying to accomplish on the cheap. I want to generate backing tracks with BIAB and am not satisfied with the included Roland Sound Canvas, nor Native Instruments Bandstand that I have installed. I like the sounds in Proteus VX. What program can I export the midi from BIAB into that I can run VSTi and DXi instruments and audio that doesn't cost a fortune. I also have Adobe Audition 1.5 that will play external midi instruments and GM, but not DXi or VSTi. I trying not to spend a lot of money on this because I don't play keyboards. I also have Powertracks 4.0 (yeah I know its old) and would upgrade it if I knew it would work. Thanks again.

Real Band and Power Tracks are essentially the same basic program. My biggest complaint with the VX, besides the fact that I can't get it to work in RB, is that it is not a General MIDI compatible synth, so it's not a 'plug and play' type of a synth.
You might consider using the SFX Soundfont player and soundfonts (it's in another thread I posted today, but I don't remember which one) as a VSTi and plugging in a better grade GM soundfont. That might help you.

Proteus has a lot of usable sounds and sounds much better than VSC. It will assign 16 channels of midi and each sound is tweakable. It takes a little more effort than VSC to figure out how to use it but once you do it's not that hard to set up. It's free to get you to upgrade and if you give it an honest try you might, who knows but it's not crap. Cakewalk includes TTS. Guess which pay for product that was (it used to get raves). Don't expect 1 synth to cover all the instruments. Every synth has a few duds.
There is another deal called Independence Free. I haven't tried it because it was a huge download. I can't remember if it was a sampler or just what but lots of folks liked that one as well.
Call PG and ask them if Proteus works.

Hi When I used Proteus VX as a Direct X plugin it freezes and crashes BIAB. The way I use VX now is in 'standalone mode' rather than VST plugin and it works fine for me. To do this you have to install the Midi Yoke http://www.midiox.com/ on your computer which gives eight virtual midi inputs and outputs,it looks all rather daunting at first but once setup its very easy. 1.Install Midi Yoke on computer 2.In BIAB midi output driver select Midi Yoke:1 3.Run Proteus VX in standalone mode 4.In Proteus VX options/preferences/midi select Midi Yoke:1 as the input 5.Play BIAB and you should see midi activity in Proteus 6.Its now a matter of choosing your sounds in Proteus
The Proteus Composer X soundset which comes with it has some great sounds to use.

So near yet so far. Installed Midi yoke and followed your instructions in BIAB and Proteus. When I hit the play button in BIAB, the song generates, then I get the following message: "Your driver uses a data format that the program doesn't yet support". When I click OK, I get the following message: "Error creating ASIO buffer". I am using a M-Audio Audiophile 2496 soundcard with the latest driver. So what do I do next?

Hi It sounds like you are using ASIO for BIAB and maybe Proteus VX at the same time. I have found that BIAB is a bit 'flaky' when using ASIO so I tend to stick with MME audio drivers as only one 'program' can use ASIO at a time. Other than trying these suggestions I'm afraid its a bit of 'try this try that' approach. 1.In BIAB use the MME audio drivers 2.In Proteus VX options/preferences/audio use the Direct Sound audio driver. 3.If that works good, if not try switching Proteus VX back to ASIO audio drivers.
The Midi Input driver in BIAB must be different to the output driver ...example input set to Yoke:2 and output to Yoke:1 would be fine. Make sure the Use VST/DXi Synth option in BIAB is unticked.

Okay Brian, you are officially a BIAB genius! I changed the BIAB driver to MME, and Proteus driver to Direct Sound and ran in standalone mode and everything works. I also unticked the VST/DXi Synth option. Almost everything works anyway. When I try to render my song I get the following message:
"There is a problem with your sound hardware. To install mixer devices, go to Control Panel, click Printers and other hardware, and then click add hardware."
Any ideas?

how are you trying to render?
from the manual
Press the [.WAV] button and Band-in-a-Box will render the song arrangement to an audio wave file. The Render to Audio File dialog box permits you to save your file as a wave file (*.wav), a Windows Media Audio (*.wma) file, or other compressed audio formats supported by your system. You can direct render “MIDI only” songs into high quality wave files with the included Roland VSC DXi or any other DXi or VST softsynth you have.
The MIDI parts are converted directly to audio without being rendered (recorded) in real time, usually in just a few seconds.
You can direct render to audio as separate tracks.
If this option is chosen, separate WAV files get written (mono or stereo) for each track (names MySong_Bass.WAV, MySong_Drums.WAV, etc.) so you can import tracks to your favorite sequencer as audio files. For direct rendering, you can also choose whether you want the output file to be mono or stereo.

"Direct Render" only works with a DXi synth.
If you want to make a .wav file of that VX output, you will have to route your soundcard's output to input (Depends on soundcard, might be called, "What U Hear" or "Stereo Mix" or "Monitor Mix" or maybe even something else) and then record the full playback of BIAB to the single Audio channel after first making sure it is set to record Stereo.

Thanks Mac, I thought that was going to be the answer. I have no issues with Dxi rendering. Thanks to all how corresponded on this matter. It is really appreciated. I am sure I will have more questions later on other topics. This is a great group!

After spending some time with Proteus VX coupled with BIAB, I must say it has really inspired me to spend more time with BIAB. There is a learning curve involved (like all of the basses have to be transposed an octave up in Proteus), but the sound difference is remarkable. It's a free download so you have nothing to lose but some time. See remarks above if you have trouble getting it to work. Thanks again guys!

I will post this in Powertracks forum, but thought maybe Brian C. could help me on this. Proteus works fine in BIAB when configured as you describe. My problem in Powertracks 12 is this. When set up the same way, three things happen. 1. Proteus plays out of tune. I can't figure that one out 2. Does not play in time. I'm sure that is a latency adjustment to be made 3. The notes play staccato whether they are supposed to or not Thanks
