Bert (newbert on the forum) took this great shot of my band at our recent outdoor Brazilian jazz concert at Lake George, New York. It was a gorgeous night and you can see how beautiful a setting it is; I've been playing concerts there for the last 50 years (25 with the band you see here).

Thanks, Bert!

In the Adirondacks (where I grew up and live in the summer), you are never far from an incredible storm coming over the mountains and catching you on the lake. However, this evening was much nicer than that extraordinary cloud formation would appear. Those clouds blocked the sun as we were setting up!

Matt, you certainly live in a beautiful part of this planet. Yes, I agree that the cloud formations are fantastic.

Fantastic pic and that looks like a really cool place to play.

You couldn't ask for a better setting and backdrop.

That was a great picture but I’ll bet the music was better!

That sky looks as if it's about to fall right through the bandstand roof!!

BTW Matt, is that Mark Egan (ex Pat Metheny group) you have on bass there?; looks awfully like him!

Thank you, everyone.

Alan, Mark Egan has played this annual concert many times, but I had to replace him because of his conflict with the Gil Evans band which goes to Europe each summer at the same time. This is Don Miller, who plays primarily acoustic bass but did electric on some tunes. Don has recorded with Dizzy Gillespie and Ira Sullivan and has a terrific CD, Dial M for Bass.

We had a great guest drummer too, Richie Morales, who was the drummer for Spyro Gyra and also recorded with the Brecker Brothers and Dave Valentin. Our regular drummer couldn't make it, Joel Rosenblatt, who was also the drummer for Spyro Gyra for 13 years. Can't get one, just get another...

Great shot, Matt, would make great CD cover ART in future, as well.

I think I might also look into getting a few poster-sized blowups of that shot, sell 'em alongside the CDs at venues...

That's good stuff.

Is that a Ned Steinberger bass in the shot? Sorry, but that was the first thing my eye was drawn to besides the cool visual effect of everything blue except for the band.

Yeah, did you record the gig? I'd love to hear you live, especially with that lineup.

No recordings that I know of, at least none have surfaced. I don't prohibit them though, and people often do take pictures or make recordings.

Scott, here is Don's answer about his bass. Sorry for the length.

Hey Matt
Bass is made by Zeta and is not in fact a Ned Steinberger creation. Zeta is the company that gained fame originally for their electric violins from the early days in the 70s and 80s. They made all of Jean Luc Ponty's elec. violins for years. My bass was their top of the line and when mine was made back in 1993 the retail price was $6500.00. I bought it used in 2002 for a lot less. Unfortunately the Zeta company, like so many other great music companies in the age of corporate monopolization and corporate Big Box music stores agreeing to only carry gear by and of the corporate conglomerates, is no longer in business. They built fine hybrid instruments on the cutting edge for many years and were the most innovative and visionary company of their kind in the 70s-90s.
Thanks for asking and feel free to forward my response to your friend who had inquired as to the origin of my bass.
Regards
Don
