I just want to record my guitar into BIAB or RB. I have an XP machine with a turtle beach card, a Ketron SD2, and an Mbox mini. The ASIO driver of the Mbox seem to be problematic. I can't record from it and all the sound control panel sees is my turtle beach sound card.

Surely there's a way to make this all work. Is another box better? or should I just make tracks with BIAB abd then record the audio in another program using the BIAB as a Wav file and importing it.

'm amazingly frustrated here.

I like to export BB files and import them into a fullblown recordign sequencer anyway, since BIAB only has the one Audio track available and the Audio editing is rather limited by comparison.

Hey Chappyware,

+1 to Macs post. I think this is the way to go, at least until BIAB upgrades the Sequencer and Mixer.

As far as making things work, I would do the following:

1. Ditch the Turtle beach card and Mbox.

2. Buy the new M-Audio 610, and also buy the new version of Pro Tools 8 M Powered.

Not sure exactly on price, but PT 8 is amazing and you should be able to do anything you want with your guitar, many users are raving about the sound of the 610, also the mic Preamps are supposed to be stellar for the price.

If price is not an object, and you want the best possible set up, check this out:

1. Mac Pro or Macbook Pro 17

2. M-Audio Profire Lightbridge (Optical bridge to using Pro Tools without Digidesign hardware) and Pro Tools 8 M-Powered.

3. Prizm Sound Orpheus, the absolute pinnacle of Firewire Audio Interfaces.

4. The new Mac version of BIAB......still waiting on that one......

With that setup and a good mic, you could make platinum albums in your bedroom!

Hope that helps,
Ed

Is there anything less resource hungry than Protools? It barely runs on my machine- I got 8 LE with this Mbox Mini and its just about unusable without dedicating a machine to it..i can't. I'm no pro, just a hobbyist who wants to make a few tracks with him playing one or two parts. I'll settle for the one audio track if I can get it into the Pc reasonably while keeping my Ketron SD2.

Someone point me in the right direction. please

Well, you can go to the M Audio website and check the minimum specs. In most cases, you can run Sonar, Cubase and Pro tools M powered with Windows XP, 1 GB of ram (Although 2 GB would be a great idea, ram is cheap these days). As for the Processor, I know some guys who are running all this stuff on a Pentium 4 with 1 GB or ram. As you said, you just want to record your guitar, although at some point you might want to add vocal tracks. Also check Digidesign to see if the Mbox Mini has an updated ASIO driver, in many cases this will solve your problem.

I used Sonar for years, and Cubase before that. I just find the new version of Pro Tools to be flat out amazing, and you might be able to get it running with just a little upgrading. Keep in mind you will need M-Audio hardware (Profire 610 or 2626, etc) to get it running, but its well worth it, as the sonics of both of these are WAY beyond the Mbox.

Hope that helps, PM me if you need help,
Ed

If you are simply recording your guitar over BiaB tracks, there is very few DAWs simpler than Real Band, I know it is no Protools, but for the hobbiest, or home recording studio it is very solid. It takes in BiaB files like a champ and allows up to 48 tracks and has very decent effects.

If i do not use that program i use an indy called Multitrackstudio from Brmmers audio, inexpensive and rock stinkin solid. Between MTS, RB, and BiaB i can do anything i want and with complete ease. The powertracks program here is nice as well, but i have not opend it since RB other than to make a couple harmony tracks.

Ed,
I actually left PT 7 to go to Sonar because it was such a drag on my machine, Athlon 64 X2 3800+, 2 gigs of Ram, dedicated hard drives, XP Pro, etc. I couldn't keep a session running long enough to be useful, and without it crashing, so I gave up on it, and went to Sonar. Have had absolutely no problems since.

Chappy, if you have a desktop, I would recommend a Behringer UB802 mixer (inexpensive, but very functional) and a M-Audio 2496 PCI card. Connect the two together, and you'll have an awesome audio interface that will allow you to record two mic ins, and several stereo pair in, meaning your guitars, vocals and SD2 can all be recorded at the same time. Of course, I would record each track individually, but some don't want to do that.

Real Band will handle that set up very nicely, giving you a wide range of options.

You can go with a USB audio interface, PG Music sells the Roland UA1-EX, I think it is, for about $79. Paired with the aforementioned UB802 it will also give you just as good a system for recording two channels at a time.

I've looked, and it appears the UB802 may be discontinued, but Amazon still has some, Guitar Center has them.

http://www.amazon.com/Behringer-UB802-Eurorack-Mixer-Inputs/dp/B0002JF5CM

For $50, it's not a bad deal. I know, I have one, have used it for years, and although I've upgraded to a 16 channel Yamaha, I still find uses for my Behringer.

In either of the scenarios I've given you, you're at or below $150, not including tax or shipping. That isn't really bad for all you're getting.

Gary

I'm blessed watching God do what He does best. I've had a few rough years, and I'm still not back to where I want to be, but I'm on the way and things are looking far better now than what they were!

To clarify -- I think by "PT7" that Gary means ProTools 7, not Powertracks.

I don't want to say anything bad about Protools, so I won't say much about it.

+1 for Sonar with a lower cost home studio right up to their Producer 8. If you buy a cheaper
version, you can always upgrade to next years bigger version at a steep discount.

pgmusic has PowerTracks which is supposed to be pretty good, and there is also
the new Realband which is sort of like a BIAB and PowerTracks put together.

As far as your original question, have you considered a guitar amp modeler / USB interface?
Line6 has some really affordable i/o boxes with big software modeling bundles, also with preamp modeling. I have an M-Audio Black Box which also works stand alone without a PC, it is my PC
"soundcard", has a MIC input, USB. Haven't had a problem for years once I turned of the MS USB sleep mode - M-Audio has a tech description on their site. Has knobs on it.

A huge variety of interfaces including a really cheap and portable Beringer USB cable/audio IO for under $50.

Think more about what your requirements are. Also, try the Cakewalk forum - even if you are asking about a guitar/ I/O - USB.

good luck.

Let us know what you pick and how you like it.

Finally, I have found a cool signature with sufficiently dry humor.
