Just fishing for information. Anyone had a chance to give BIAB 2014 a spin? I'm interested to know what UserTracks is like and what can be achieved by it?

I am really anxious to try this out. I read a little in the manual and it seems to be pretty straight forward. Not sure if I can play smoothly enough, in time, in order to create a user track though. gonna find out soon!

BB King often plays short phrases.
I'd like to do some transcribing, dial in his tone, and record some user tracks. Kind of like a BB King user track. One could do this for a lot of artists.

Does anyone know how UserTracks handle passing tones? For example, C-D-E-F-G works fine in C major over a C chord. But if I have a song in G major and use the same riff on a C chord without transposing, the F will clash with the F# in the key signature. Do UserTracks account for the base key signature? That is, does it limit the transposed chord to functioning over the same scale degree in the new key signature, or does it just transpose it and hope for the best? I don't have BiaB 2014 (yet), and I'm trying to figure out what sort of riffs would work well with UserTracks. If passing tones aren't accounted for, it's obviously safer (but more boring) to stick with chordals. If I do end up creating UserTracks, time stretch and pitch correction in my DAW are going to become best of friends.  A related question: when UserTracks are transposed, are they limited to upward transpositions? Otherwise things like flute and bass would go beyond their range, which might sound a bit odd. Thanks!

There is a new "UserTrack Development" button in the Bar Settings window that gives you various options for UserTracks. One of the options is "Only choose this bar if the key matches" - so that would take care of passing tones. There is no limit on transposing. So a flute might be transposed +6 or -6 semitones if you provide a limited recording. For example, if you ONLY record a C major riff, and then you try to use the UserTrack with a G major chord, it will have to transpose the C major riff down 5 semitones. But, if you record more riffs like F major, then it would choose that instead and only have to transpose it up 2 semitones.

One of the options is "Only choose this bar if the key matches" - so that would take care of passing tones. Thanks, Blake! That clarifies it a lot. I'm still going to propose a "don't transpose down" or "don't transpose down if possible" option (in advance). From a guitarist's POV, it makes sense to barre chords up, but not down. So voicings will be more likely to come out "right" that way. And it'll keep instruments from going out of range. Well, for lazy people (like me) who create minimal databases.

Whether Transpose works up or down is likely more dependent upon the kind of guitarist, style and genre, too.
For example, when chord comping in Jazz, Modern Jazz and Bebop, it is customary to only use closed chords, as in no open strings. Those seem to transpose well in either direction here.
