Working on a Motown tune Bernadette. Got the 1st and 2nd endings to work properly, however, the last 3 bars there is a repeat and fade. Doesn't seem to work although it looks proper in notation (see attached file). Any ideas?

Kudos to you for doing it right.

I simply unfold into one big chorus and let it roll. Any fades are done after the fact in the mixdown in my DAW.

Sorry, that likely wasn't the answer you are seeking.... someone who actually can answer that will be along shortly to tell you how it can be done in BB.

What doesn't seem to work - the repeat or the fade or both? What does BIAB actually do?

For those last bars, I would use a TAG ending and not try to use any repeats on the fade, just type out the number of bars needed there and then invoke the fade.

If you try to do a Fade over a Repeat, the Fade would have to repeat over and over as well as the music, and that's not a Fade Out.

Wow - I didn't even know you could do a fade! You learn something new every day!

Mac,
I know from your many posts, that you like tag endings, but to be fair, we should really address the problem "How do you do it with repeats, within BIAB"

I like repeats, but I have never tried to fade, although it is an option withing song settings (the S button) It seems that it should work.

You do need to create the linear song first, and then add the repeats and presumably the fade.

"Like" is an emotion.

Its not so much a matter of what I "like" at all.

It is just that I've better success using the program that way and using those Repeats for when I need a chart to pass out to other musicians who prefer to see it as the Repeats.

Have had difficulty with using the Repeats for song playback and that's the reason. Like or dislike has nothing to do with it.

You are right that Repeats can be hard to work with, which is why, at every opportunity, I try to emphasise that PGMusic needs to work on notation.

Generally I have been able to make repeats work, but it can be difficult. Your preference is Tag endings. But for the Harpman58, we should try to find an answer to his problem. I do believe you can do a fade ending with repaets once you have established the linear thread for the music.

My point was to answer the question, not find an alternative solution.

Just tried repeat and fade, and it seems to work as advertised.

I copied the last 4 bars of a song to the end, and then appended a new repeat of 4 bars times 3 to the 'repeats and ending dialogue'. The song already had 3 endings so this was essentially an ending within the last ending.

I then changed the fade to 12 bars. Low and behold - it worked fine. It doesn't fade to zero, but it does fade

Dave your point is valid, but sometimes an alternate solution is the best answer. There are a lot of tools in the BiaB tool box, many that do a passable job, but not a great one. If there is a alternate solution that gets the job done, then is that not a answer to the question?

A good illustration might be I want to cut some lumber with my skilsaw to build a book case, what is the best type of blade to use for cross cut?

Well i have never had much success with cutting lumber for furniture building with a skillsaw, i prefer to use a table saw, and or a miter saw. While not answering the exact question, it does offer the best solution.

Using the best method usually gives the best results.
