Hi Folks,
I'm working on a song which has quite a number of interludes. I use the notation mode to enter the lead notes. There are two problems that I can't find solutions for. The first is, one cannot, it seems, use realtracks in this way. Generating real tracks causes BAIB to re-generate the melody...I think.
The second is that I eventually settled for Midi Super track piano. It sounds okay, but too mechanical and pristine. I would have liked to sustain some of the notes and make it much, much more legato. Any ideas? I can't post the song as it is a cover... bummer smirk

A RealTrack can be "Frozen" to prevent regeneration of that track, but a RealTrack cannot be edited by the note as it is composed of Audio snippets and they are typically whole phrases anyway. Can't change the notes you get.

When using a MIDI synth/sampler, we are at the mercy of the particular sample being played at the time. If that patch happens to have an Attack at the beginning of each note, there is no command to not have that attack. However, some synths have Velocity layers in which using a lesser Velocity figure for the note results in less of the Attack. One can also sometimes play some tricks such as extending the Duration value of a previous note such that it overlaps the attack of the following note a bit, kind of "blurring" the attack of the second note.

There is a way to achieve a Legato 'effect' for MIDI Super Tracks using Sustain Pedal, but requires RealBand.

1:
Open the song in Real Band
2:
Select the MIDI track with the Piano
3:
Select the Event Editor
Add further Pedal On events or possibly just remove some Pedal Off events

Freeze the Track and Save.

You may need to now use the file in Real Band though.

You can stay in bb for that.

PianoRoll view, select "Control" from the dropdown at top, another dropdown appears with the cc list, select cc64 Pedal Sustain and draw them in on the lower window.

Yes, but I always found exact positioning of Control 'Off' Events to be more difficult this way.

The Position of the 'On' event can be moved with the mouse cursor, the Off event can be more difficult to position accurately. Is there an easy way to accurately position Control Off Events in the Piano Roll?

Hi KarelD

MIDI is not extremely difficult to comprehend.

Fundamentally, MIDI is a set of 'data commands' that are used to communicate between two devices, usually to control a musical instrument.

The MIDI data is not musical in its own right, it takes the musical instrument it connects to, to convert all of those commands into the required a musical sounds.

The commands can consist of a lot more than just 'which note to play'. They include 'patch changes' to select different instruments, loudness, expression, pitch bend, tremolo and chorus, sustain commands and much more.

Most users don't actually need to know the internals of MIDI data to use it. Programs like Band In A Box handle all of this for you.

You can read more detail here

I only use the manual note-entry and cc methods for bits of cleanup and editing.

That is because I always have a MIDI Controller keyboard of some sort hooked up and I greatly prefer to simply overdub such things as the Pedal in realtime by Recording MIDI events and keeping the underlying ones when prompted.

That means basically just playing the song back in Record MIDI Events mode and simply pressing the Pedal and releasing it as appropriate while the song plays. Done.

Of course, if working with a Track that is not on the Melody or Soloist in BB, this is more easily accomplished on the other tracks inside RealBand.
