Well… Now I’ve done it. I had a bit of a problem with my computer this morning and ended up having to re-install BIAB and RB. No big deal, right? Wrong. I can’t get RB to play… no MIDI sounds coming out. I don’t understand it… when I first got the SD2 it was so easy to install…

I have the M-Audio USB MIDI interface. And yes… I have the plugs in the right “IN” and “OUT” sockets. The RCA plugs come out from the back of the SD2 into my Audigy 2. In fact, I didn’t even remove any of the wires so they’re all in the same places as they have been all along.

I have the MIDI driver setup pointing to USB UNO in and USB UNO out. I have checked the Audigy mixer… the input where I have the SD2 plugged in is open. I checked Windows… MIDI playback is set to USB UNO MIDI OUT. All of the volumes are up in both the Audigy and Windows mixers. When I play a song, the SD2 is flashing, meaning that MIDI is going into it. But it doesn’t come out.

I made sure that I had the latest M-Audio drivers for the interface - the same setup as I had before this problem.

The only way I can get any MIDI sounds to come out is if I select "SB Audigy Synth A" for the output driver. Needless to say this isn’t what I want.

I went way back in the forum looking for old posts that I might have made about this… but the only post that refers to the SD2 is the one I made, telling everyone that I got a new SD2 and how much I loved it. This is what I can’t understand… it installed so easy when I got it… what’s wrong now?

Much appreciated…
Bobby

Likely the Audigy software mixer needs to be set to turn on and turn up the Line Input that the SD2 audio output is connected to, check that first.

I'm afraid not, Mac. I've just spent the past 45 minutes checking anything I could find regarding sound. Both the Audigy and Windows mixers/volume controls are up... and aren't muted. I can't believe this. Everything was running so smooth until this happened. Oh... I reinstalled my Uno driver too. Everything sees everything. When I play a note on my keyboard it shows on the piano in the software. The SD2 blinks as well. But no dice. I made sure that I re-installed the MIDI maps for the SD2. One thing I wanted to ask you, changing the subject for a sec... is it normal for RB to tell you that it has converted the "patches.ini" into "patches.bin" when you first start it up?

Here's something else I've just noticed... When everything was working fine, I'd pick a patch in RB and in doing so there would be a "picture" of the instrument on the left of said track. When I'm picking a track NOW... it just gives the number of the track... no little picture.

The lack of pictures and the lack of sound are surely two unrelated issues.

Let's tackle the lack of sound first.

Do you have a set of headphones that you can plug directly into the SD2's headphone jack? Play back a song and see if you can hear the sounds there first.

Lots of questions, Bobby.

First would be, why did you go buy an expensive mixer and then plug the Ketron into the Audigy?
Secondly, of course, is, did you make sure the volume slider was up on the Ketron?
Third, use the headphones and make sure you hear sound.
Go to the Record Input on the Creative Mixer and make sure it's set to whatever input you're using.
Next, make the sure PLAYBACK slider for the Creative, for whatever input, isn't muted, that one has got me on more than one occasion.
What OS?
Are you getting system sounds out of the Logitechs, and have you checked to make sure they're plugged in, turned on, and the S/PDIF input is connected to the output of the SoundCard.

I do not believe that this is a BIAB/RB issue. If you get sound from the SoundFont synth, and you see indications on the MIDI indicator on the Ketron, it should be producing output. So, using the headphones first verifies that the SD2 is working. Then, you need to go trace back from there to the Audigy. If the Logitechs have an analog input on them, plug the Ketron directly into them and bypass the computer audio.

Finally, it is very possible, if everything else is correct, that your Audigy drivers died. You may need to reinstall those, as well. *That* is a PITA.

All I should say here is that it's fixed. I shouldn't go into detail telling you guys what the problem was because I'm too embarrassed. But I guess I'll have to own up.

Once I read Gary's post I started doing everything he told me to do - well... almost everything. I even went so far as to uninstall the Audigy drivers and get the new ones. Once done, same thing - no MIDI sound. I was getting ready to through my stuff out the window like you see it done in jokes that you get in your email. I took a walk to try to calm down. When I came back, Gary's post was still up on the screen. I happened to notice his question asking me if the volume slider was up on the KD2. So I figured, what the heck... even though I KNOW that's not the problem I'll check it just for fun. Um... maybe you guys can fill in the rest of the lines from here. Like I said... I'm too embarrassed to continue. So sorry for taking up the time that it took you both to answer my lame question.

In my defence... I have my KD2 hidden under my desk and so I'm not looking at it directly... I have to take it out to do that. I guess while I was playing with wires and such - ALL DAY - I must have hit the slider. But I guess that's really not a good defence after all, huh? If anything... I've learned that the next time I have a problem I have to look at the most obvious things that might be causing it first. This just proves that the cause of a problem doesn't have to be as complicated as you think it HAS to be. Another lesson learned.

OH... the mixer... I'm using it with the KD2 but I took it out while I was trying to get MIDI sound today... I just wanted to elimnate the mixer as being part of the problem. It's plugged in again.

Thanks for everything guys - very much appreciated!!!

Glad you got it worked out, Bobby.

Things like that get all of us sooner or later.

TIP: I think mine sounds best with that volume slider turned all the way up, all the time. Make any adjustments in software.

No embarassment or explanation needed.

There was a news item here recently about an $11,000 dedicated word processor in a county office which had never worked despite multiple service calls.

One day a janitor was doing some especially thorough cleaning in the office, pulling filing cabinets and equipment away from the walls. He found an unconnected power cord and asked one of the office personnel whether they wanted 'this thing' plugged in. The device worked much better with power.

I had to make a house call for a computer system because the speakers didn’t work. After checking all of the volume controls and noticing that the speakers were indeed on I checked in the back of the computer to find they had plugged the speaker plug into the line in jack! Easiest money I ever made!

Back in my day the only time we started panic buying was when the bartender shouted "last call"!

I worked in a bull pen office when I was doing fire investigations.

I started work at 7:30. The secretaries came in a 8:30. Then the fun began. They were at the other end of a 60 foot room. The first order of business was to print the previous day's inspection reports, a job that took about an hour, it was automated, print the notice and envelope 10 inspectors about 10 reports each. Done by 10 or so. I always wore short sleeve shirts all day. The were always coming near my cubicle, playing with the thermostat, putting on sweaters, then taking them off, whatever. I usually left the office by 8:30 so didn't see much of the action but one day I hurt my ankle so I decide to stay at my desk. About 2 p.m. a guy with a toolbelt comes by, checks the thermostat, changes it. He then says to me 8 service calls since you guys moved in and I can never find anything wrong. They say the other end of the room is stone cold (where the women sit with heaters under their desks typing away...). I think for a minute and mention that we do get the east sun through our windows and they don't. Then it really dawns on me, I say watch this, and print 20 copies of the same page. The printer had a fan on the top and was about 10 inches below the thermostat. The thermostat started saying it was 70, 75, 80, 85, 90...LOL.

I moved the printer 2 feet and put a piece of cardboard over the fan to deflect it away, used a piece of duct tape. When he explained what was wrong to the Admin Chief who wandered by and how I figured it out and fixed it the guy says, ya, got a problem we send him to the scene, he gets a stool and sits there for an hour and figures it out. I mentioned that in the 5 months we'd been there I never stayed in the office and that no asked me.....

No need for embarrassment, Bobby. We've all had egg on our face a time or two. Probably three or four in my case.

Bobby,
As you said, it's the most obvious things that trip us up, and yes, I've been there too. So, don't feel embarrassed for more than 30 seconds. What your post does, however, is offer a possible solution to others who may have a similar problem, and may read it, and go 'Nah, I didn't do that.....did I?/

Thanks for all the understanding... heh... When I told my wife about it at around midnight last night - that's when I found the "problem"... she had a good laugh. And then she reminded me about something else I did a few years ago. She had this lamp that wasn't working. She wanted to use it so she asked me if I could take a look at it. So... the first thing that came to mind was that the plug needed to be changed. This I did... and when I plugged it in it still didn't work. I was baffled... and then, on a lark, I decided to check the light bulb. Bingo. She laughed at me over that one as well... for well over a half hour. I guess I deserved it.
