One of the residents in my retirement village just downloaded IE8 (well actually, Microsoft didn't give her any options, it just downloaded) and now she finds that several of the web sites that she used to go to, no longer work.
These include sites like Wikipedia and Qantas. They just give a message saying that the link has broken.
When I Googled the message, I got a very long-winded explanation of how these sites no longer conformed to IE8's standards, showing me many snippets of code that should be included in the pages to make them work.
Since when did Microsoft write the standards for Internet pages? I thought that HTML4.0 was THE standard.
Has anyone else come across this bizarre behaviour?
I might add that since this first incident, several more residents have had the same experience>

Yeah. I use Firefox myself. But trying to teach some of these Little old ladies to use something new is like trying to teach someone how to drive the Mars Rovers from Earth. It takes a long time to sink in.

What's that definition of insanity? Doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting a different result . . . The first link is about IE 7. And 6. And 5. And 4. And your point is . . . ?

G'day Don,
this may help - it seems microsoft are aware that sensible people don't actually like IE8... Can't imagine why...

HOWEVER, before you start I highly recommend setting a restore point!

"Since when did Microsoft write the standards for Internet pages? I thought that HTML4.0 was THE standard."

M$ doesn't write the standards, w3.org does. http://w3.org
Since IE is still the most used browser, it does affect web development.
HTML4.0 is fading... then 4.1 and now XHTML has become "the thing". (see w3.org link)

Soon HTML 5 will be king. Go figger.. I go to school right when html 4 is old (some features already being deprecated) and html 5 is yet to come... with those same deprecated features toting support again..<grin>

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

I'm using IE8 at home and in the office and it's worked 100% ok since it was downloaded; not a single glitch. Wiki and Qantas sites included.
I'm sure I'd have seen huge stories on the news sites if this was a mass worldwide problem and I haven't.

IE8 has a Compatability Mode button.

Compatability Mode is for viewing sites that don't have the special code.

Of COURSE it does. And, of course, everyone will know that it's there, and what it does.

I still haven't gotten over MS having moved the Home, Refresh, and Cancel buttons in IE7. Is there a button to put those back where they had been for the previous 10 years? The only reason I use IT is because certain sites I visit require it. I admit the Tabs are nice, but that's the only functional improvement as far as I'm concerned. And can someone tell me how to make the *$#)@&% text menu stay visible?

I even found a way, using settings available within IE 7, to make it stop working entirely--with no way to get it back except for doing a System Restore. What genius designed that in?

I use Firefox 3.5, and I would not touch IE8 with a bargepole - been there done that with the beta version. It broke my IE7 and the beta was a mess having no toolbar and other sundry problems.Only a reinstallation of the entire OS and of course a week or two to install all my programs fixed it.
