without doubt(for me anyway) Peter Green (Ex Fleetwood Mac)..Not only that but his voice was superb and as "bluesy"as you can get.Id be interested in knowing what guitarists are the favourites of the forum users on here.Thanks Frank

OK, lets be civil  . Remember beauty is in the eye (ear) of the beholder. I like the idea of this thread. Not a list of the top 1000 Guitar Gods, but just a simple testimony to one or two who caught a special interest in your life. So put me down for two master-class gutarists who touched me (...in a good way  ), but who may have never risen to God level. Lindsey Buckingham - interestingly a Fleetword Mac guy - truly inspirational Joe Walsh - you need to hear him playing in a solo gig Gary Moore - (I know I said only two, but this guys "Still Got the Blues" changed my life ..thats another story)

One of the first Bands I saw live was Fleetwood Mac Blues Band at The Filmore East. It was the late sixties and Peter Green was great. Also seeing Jeff Beck and Jimi Hendrix around the same all changed my life.
I also saw The Yardbirds at The Anderson Theatre in NY and also in Christ The King High School. Jimmy Page blew me away. The Anderson Theatre performance was their last and Led Zep was soon to follow.
They truly changed my life and got me into the Blues forever.

I think if you’re talking guitarists, you’ve got to break it down into categories, (not musical styles, but skill levels): 1st Acoustic, (which is a helluva lot harder to play, it therefore deserves extra points); Flatpicking (aka: using a pick) Fingerpicking 2nd Electric, (which is a helluva lot easier to play than acoustic); Flatpicking (aka: using a pick) Fingerpicking 3rd Musicality Let the games begin! some of my favorite guitar players are unknowns who posted amazing things on youtube. I'd say their names but I probably couldn't find the videos again.
My favorite well-known guitarist is Eric Johnson. He plays many styles very well.
I especially like his notes-in-the-chord approach to running all over the fretboard.
favorite classical guitarist is Christopher Parkening.
For Jazz I still like Hank Garland and Johnny Smith. I love the way they used chords to play the entire melody plus accompaniment.
I like Stevie Ray's tone, but his playing was awfully redundant
These aren't necessarily the best, just people who influenced me.

Influences:
Rock: Jeff Beck, the guv'nor. I've seen him many times and am always gobsmacked.
Blues Rock: Peter Green for sheer taste when it comes to phrasing.
Blues (and for kicking it all off for me): BB, Albert and Freddie.
Those I also love to listen to:
Jerry Douglas, Ron Block, David Gilmour, Jimmy Page, Larry Carlton, Roy Buchanan.

Bob, I wouldn't say that the electric guitar is easier to play than the acoustic, just vastly different. I am trying to get into electric after playing acoustic for years and I am not finding it any easier. The guitar is probably the easiest instrument to play badly anyway.

I meant physically easier. The dynamics are tougher on acoustic too. No tone controls or effects to rely on. You’ve got to coax it out the “box”.
Acoustic
1st. Flatpick. Tony Rice, Bryan Sutton, David Grier, Russ Barenberg and Mark O’Connor. Mark doesn’t play acoustic guitar anymore because it’s too hard on his hands, (see the point above, it's a helluva lot harder). But he did play for me once on my custom Martin flat top and I’ve never heard such beautiful music out of that guitar. Chet Atkins said Mark was the most talented person to ever play in Nashville.
2nd. Fingerpicking. Just for sheer musicality, not technical prowess, James Taylor.
Electric
1st. Flatpick. (Yes I know it’s not called flatpicking on the electric, but it is using a “flatpick”.) Stevie Ray Vaughn, (yes he can be “redundant”, but that’s what blues is), and Billy Gibbons for the most music with the fewest notes.
2nd. Fingerpicking. Tuck Andress, Joe Pass, Chet Atkins and Mark Knopfler.
Musicality. Tuck Andress. I thought it was 2 or 3 guitarists the first time I heard him.

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!
Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass.
