If you'll look back at my list of guitar players, you'll see that I listed James Taylor as my favorite fingerpicking acoustic guitarist. Why? Because of his musicality. He's FAR from being the most technically proficient. I just like his playing.
Even in my list of flatpickers, I didn't list the ones that could play the fastest or most technical. I listed the ones who played the most "musical".
One of the reasons I don't like a lot of modern jazz players is that the music goes out the window at the expense of speed and scales.
For a short while, (about 1-1/2 years), I played in 7 or 8 "flatpicking" contests. I got 2 first places, 2 second places, 2 third places, and 1 fourth place. I "choked" the other the other time or two. I beat a couple of national champions and several state champions. I didn't play faster than the other guys. I didn't necessarily play more technical than the other guys. But I think I was successful because I played more musically, with more feeling and had better arrangements.
And if you'll notice, I listed electric players like Billy Gibbons who "say the most with the fewest notes". He's definitely not a "technical" player.
I thought this was a good thread because I picked up several links to some good music. I'm more than a little confused as to why you say you're sorry you made the post.

In my opinion this is a problem in all genres, not just jazz.
I like your term "Musicality"... to me, that's what makes me able to listen to a whole CD without having to walk away to catch my breath. Amazing players in all styles eventually give me ear fatigue. But, make it MUSICAL, and I can listen all day!
Yet, for one or two songs, I DO love to hear the virtuosos play their stuff! But, after that, I have to walk away to rest my senses. It's like eating too much spicy food. I don't like the spices to be the main focus of the meal... I like the meat and potatoes to have center stage.
I thought the youtube piece (Jazz, Al DiMeola et al) posted above was a good example of amazing playing that was hard to listen to.

Ive already said you completely missed the thrust of my post.It was for everyones "personal" favourite guitar player that I was hoping to see posted up .Your first post in reply was to knock "my" choice of Peter Green which as I repeat wasnt what this thread was about. I also like James Burton and Chet Atkins even a brilliant picker from my neck of the woods Wales Micky Gee who has just died but they arent my "favourite" player Peter Green is.Instead of your first post being who your favourite guitarist or guitarists were it was an critical assessment of my choice and thats why I said I wish I hadnt posted this up.It wasnt an argument I wanted but a insight into other forum users on their choice of their favourite guitar players.Frankie

If I offended you by my statement about Peter Green, then I apologize.
It was meant as a good natured joke since Fleetwood Mac isn't usually associated with good guitar playing, all due respect to Peter Green and Lindsey Buckingham.
Humour doesn't always translate well in typing. Remember John McEnroe's frequent statement of "you cannot be serious"?
Actually my favorite Fleetwood Mac album isn't FM, but Buckingham/Nicks. The album showed where the real FM sound came from.
It's still a good thread though.

Hey Frank, I took a listen to Peter and really liked what I heard. The cat can play, irregardless of how he tunes his ax. My favorite player right now is Martino, although like Mac said, there are so many good ones that play all genres it's hard to pick just one. Favorite of all time, Howard Roberts. Loved his tone. Players with the biggest influence on my musical path? Martino, Montgomery, Roberts, Coryell, Remler, Benson, Lonnie Mack, Hank Marvin, Tony Mottola, as well as Brent Mason, Doug Seven..............the list goes on and on.
We're all on the same journey, just on different roads sometimes.

Hi Ikmuller.Im glad you liked PG.i also admire other guitarists Classical John Williams blues BB King Eric Clapton and rock David Gilmour but Pete Green to coin a phrase from the Matrix is "THE ONE" Cheers Frankie By the way Im a singer not a guitarist but would have loved to have learned that magical instrument. nah! the post is right.There are other guitarists Ive mentioned who I admire but for me PG effects me the most.I guess Im from the old fashion school of love.Eg there are many beautiful women who I can say "wow" but my wife now thats more than "wow"thats love..Frankie

Yes, I've always admired Hank B's tasteful 'just what's needed' playing. One of the first tunes I attempted was 'Apache'!
I neglected in my earlier post to include Frank Zappa. Again, not to everyone's taste but while Frank's playing is challenging it's also very, very inventive as well as original, angular, and totally cliche free, which is perhaps why it sounds challenging at first.
What a wonderful instrument the guitar is when its wood and wire can provide opportunities for such an enormous range of musicians to express themselves!

If you transcribe eenough Zappa, you start to find his cliches.
They were his own cliches, though.
Thing about Frank was that he naturally subdivided in odd note groups. Fives, Sevens, Elevens. He wrote that he had problems trying to divide in even groups like everybody else.
And if you transcribe what he played, you soon find that out. Five notes over one beat (say, "hippopotamus" while playing the note string and you'll get it right every time.).
Once you get into the swing of the above, it is amazing how many "cliche" patterns on the neck that Frank used yet they were disguised so well due to the use of the above.
Okay, don't want to be accused of the thread hijack so I'll stop there.

Hi Frank,
I know Fleetwood Mac is not known as the Led Zepplins of the world. But, they have had well schooled guitarist in that of Lyndsey Buckingham. I wish I can recall some older tracks with Peter Green. But, when you have talent like Mick Fleetwood in the band, you better be good at what you do to contribute. One of the many techniques I appreciate with Lyndsey was his banjo style picking technique. Was Pete there in the "Hypnotized" days?
As for guitarists, I also agree with the post about Al Dimeloa. Elegant Gypsy Suite album really spearheaded a lot of what can be done using an electric guitar for me. I recall watching him play one of the tunes where his fingers looked like a spider climbing up the neck of the guitar. No hand quivering or anything, just fingers moving incredibly fast in harmony with the other. I did not care much for his acoustical work however. That's me. I am not much of an acoustic guitar guy.
if I were to give acoustic guitars a listen Doyle Dykes would be the one to listen to. Highly recommend him if you are into insane retunings, and Chet Atkins style of picking where he plays two different songs at the same time!
Phil Keaggy I know often does not get much mention. But, you should really check out what this guy can do.
Those guitarists that I just seem to reflect when I am playing the guitar are Carlos Santana amd Stevie Ray Vaughn. I always seem to fall into their melodic emphasis mindset to where the melody sounds improvised... until you hear them do it again and again and again to realize that melody was their intention. Cool stuff.
When you mention SRV, then you have to take the guy who started where Stevie ended and that would be John Mayer. Another outstanding melodic technician.
On the Jazz front, guys like Wes Montgomery and Joe Pass brought great contributions bridging melody with chord and bass lines simultaneously. They had a great solo sound. If you just want to hear the guitar alone without the need for a bass or piano check these guys out.
Conversely, guys like Hendrix, Page, Townsend in my opinion had they not been swimming in mind altering drugs they may have had something to offer. But, the narcotics distracted them from the reaching their potential. It's a shame.
