If you transcribe eenough Zappa, you start to find his cliches.

They were his own cliches, though.

Thing about Frank was that he naturally subdivided in odd note groups. Fives, Sevens, Elevens. He wrote that he had problems trying to divide in even groups like everybody else.

And if you transcribe what he played, you soon find that out. Five notes over one beat (say, "hippopotamus" while playing the note string and you'll get it right every time.).

Once you get into the swing of the above, it is amazing how many "cliche" patterns on the neck that Frank used yet they were disguised so well due to the use of the above.
