Very nicely done! Dude, i was chillin' at my desk at work that thing almost put me to slepp! In a good way, a very relaxing and mellow recording, with some nice vocals.

Marty, Your songs are terrific! You are doing what many of us would like to do: posting remakes of well-known songs. However, you should be aware that forum rules prohibit posting links to cover songs , even if the version is your own. In fact there is a forum (accessed from the top of the page via the "view all forums" button) called USER SHOWCASE, where the users are actively encouraged to post original songs created with PGMusic products I hope this is not read as a smack-down. I'm not trying to be a song Nazi... PGMusic has paid to provide this forum here for the free use of their customers. It is in everybody's best interest to avoid posting anything that could create legal problems for them as a company. Having said all that, I look forward to hearing some original music from you in the USER SHOWCASE!

Every now and then somebody joins the forum and posts stuff that is instantly embraced and enjoyed by everyone. You are one of those people. I think I can speak for many when saying that we look forward to hearing your original songs. You seem to have a flair for putting an idea into stylish and well-mixed form.

Well Pat you took the time to select your words carefully, as to not offend, and stated the point in a very clear manner. May I also add, this did not surprise me, as this quality is typical of your contribution to the forum, Kudos to you guy.
This whole think about covers versus originals has been discussed here in the past, but, I am going to go there again….
I wish we could find a better solution. You mention you are looking forward to hearing Geezer’s original material, actually, I am not so anxious. Simply because I very much like Geezer's covers! New material in this style and genre, while it may capture the vibe, it will not capture the memories and emotion linked to a familiar song sung well and therefore it will never evoke the same comfort level to the listener.
One solution mention as been to remain discreet and simply direct folks to our personal websites, but this does not get around the real legal issue associated with ownership rights. How did we ever get to the point where people were not legally permitted to sing a song!!
Not looking for any necessary response, just wanted to vent to release some frustration. Geezer, I will bookmark your site and probably will enjoy anything you sing. By the why, I added one of your covers to my playlist and am enjoying it (although wrestling with my conscience over this rights stuff).

Carvin Forums sort of allow it. I PMd the Moderator and here was the response.
We really don't do anything special for this issue, other than have a legal disclaimer at the bottom of the page indicating that posts are the responsibility of the authors. I do delete posts that are blatent copyright infringement (songs, images, etc), but since no money is being made by the OP, I doubt that it's an issue, anyway. There are millions (probably billions) of cover songs on YouTube and other places, as well as bands playing them every night, and I suspect (hope?) that this isn't considered a "big enough fish to fry" by ASCAP/etc.
Of course, if ASCAP or anyone else asked, I'd yank them down. I believe that's how YouTube handles it - they delete stuff when there's a copyright complaint.

My answer:
The same way we've arrived at every other situation in which the total population must give up their rights and privileges in order to solve problems created by those among us who abuse those rights and privileges.
This situation is a two-sided coin, as most are.
Consider the other side of this coin as well. That would be the artists, songwriters, recording facilities, producers and other professionals of the business who have incurred the losses of income that the whole thing entails.
The rights of the many always seem to take a hit because of the trespasses of a few.
There is also the perception of a generation that grew up with Commercial Radio who view the music as being "free". They refuse to understand the concept that advertising pays the royalties for the "free" Commercial Radio and TV, along with everything other expense incurred.
Unfortunately, the Internet does not seem able to generate those kind of advertising funds.

Well lets roll back the tape to before those laws that are violated were in existence.
Artist writes song and sells said song to a performer who then cuts a record. Writers been paid. Done deal. performer sells records and gets paid. Done deal. Sheet music is sold. Done deal. If in all of the above transactions enough money was charged for the products you wouldn't have to charge some little musician,or actually the club, cause I'm playing some cover tunes and making $50.00. This whole royalty thing is just a subtle way of extorting more and more money from more and more people. When you buy a guitar you pay a fair price for it and the transactions over. Just think if you had to pay a royalty each time you played it.
Like it or not that is the present system and it needs to be changed.

Sheet music should come with a performance license. I bought the music so I could play it
Of course tracking this would be bit problematic..
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

I'm in favor of course of artists getting paid for their work.Charge a proper fee for the CD, sheetmusic, DL music etc. and do away with this exorbitant fee charged to venues so that i can play a few covers. In this way the artist will actually get the money.I can post songs to the internet etc. The artist also gets exposure.
Copying and SELLING CDs, sheetmusic etc. is another story altogether.

With all due respect, you've got to be kidding. Nobody can predict how well a new project is going to do ahead of time that's why there's royalties in the first place. You mean to tell me you would actually accept a deal where you got a flat fee for a new song you wrote and then watched it sell 10 million copies and you didn't get a piece of that? Every movie/recording project made has some form of profit sharing for the principal people involved. Therefore every time someone illegally downloads a copy of a new release it directly takes money out of the pockets of those people. The only valid argument you could make about that is many of those downloads are done by kids or poor people who probably don't have the money to buy it and therefore it doesn't really count as a lost sale. Still as we all know, there's plenty of people all around us who do this stuff everyday who certainly can afford it but think it's cool to download tons of movies and music and "stick it to the man, yeah!".
Ponder this: You're 80 years old, not rich but 50 years ago you wrote one of the biggest hits of all time and you have the rights to it. At what point would you simply give up those rights and allow anybody to do whatever with your tune? Say you walked into a hotel lounge and the performer was playing your tune. Don't you think you would still want a small piece of that? That's what ASCAP and BMI do with small venues. Larger venues like the Hollywood Bowl or big Vegas casinos actually turn in the song lists so those rights owners get paid directly per song.
What would you have the artists and their companies do John? As soon as you get the lawyers involved there's no choice but to enforce the laws that have been in place for 100 years but really never became a big problem until high speed internet came along.
As a practical matter, they're really only going after big sites who are trafficking in new releases not small niche forums like this one where most of the postings are old, classic cover tunes. But the legal principle is the same in all cases. Old song or new, unless the owner has given you a license, you have no legal right at all to do anything with it period except listen to it at home.
