Andres Segovia?

And the winner is -- marvjonesi !

While there have been plenty of good answers, each one depiciting someone who certainly has helped popularize the guitar for the most part, it was Andre Segovia, the violinist turned self-taught guitarist who hit the woodshed quite literally and transcribed Bach and other composers for guitar and then "took it to the world" on a self-proclaimed one-man mission to put the guitar into the realm of all the other instruments then thought to be "legitimate".

He brought the quiet little guitar to worldwide attention and that was the beginning of the market demand.
