Hi everyone in BIAB world,
I have just created a midi file from a wav file and opened it in BIAB so far so good.
The midi file created displays all the notes (bass piano sax.) as piano notes in the BIAB melody part when using the notation window. I expected this.
My question is can i click on individual notes in editable notation and move them to another instument part or the solo part?
Thanks for any help.

Hi Culfy - A few questions - then we can better help. How did you create a midi file from a wav file? Does the midi file have lots of parts (bass, piano, sax) prior to bringing it into BIAB or just a melody, or ??? How did you bring the midi file into BIAB - Import Chords From Midi File or Open Midi File, or ??? Are you talking midi tracks or real tracks? And, most impotently, are the parts you want to edit from the original midi file and being played from melody or soloist track sequencer or the instrument parts created by BIAB?

I agree with Kelso. I might be able to contribute something here but I need more specifics of exactly what you are doing. Are we by any chance talking about some of the RealTracks that include notation?

okay first i used amazingmidi v 1.7 to create a midi file from a wav file. the original wav file had four parts sax., piano, bass and drums. in the conversion the drums are lost and the other three instruments are merged to create a piano midi file. this means all the notes from the three instruments appear and play as piano in BIAB in the melody track. i brought the midi file into BIAB style wizard initally but can simply open it as a midi file too. since asking the question i have managed to move the bass notes over to the soloist track by editing each note`s channel number from 1 (which all the notes are) to 2 and using edit-track move. i can now choose the bass instrument i want. my aim is to remove the sax. and then have a backing track in an original form without using BIAB styles. it looks as if the only problem is going to be replacing the drums as the midi file doesn`t have a fixed tempo.
my question is must i edit each single note`s channel number one by one or can i change them as a block and then transfer them to the solo track

Thanks Culfy - good description. So it sounds like you have imported a midi file with various instruments, piano, sax, and drums all merged into one track, melody, and all on one channel. You then manually moved the bass to the soloist track - good start. Now you need to get the drum out of there. You have two problems. One, how to efficiently select and move the drum notes, and two, find a place to put them. BIAB only has two tracks that you can control, melody and soloist, and you already have them used up. The next step is to utilize one of those in "sequencer" mode which lets you separate notes by channel and play polyphonically from them.

I don't see a way to do One in BIAB. It's not real strong in multiple select. The only place to do that is in the PRV, and I don't see a way to change the channel from there. BUT maybe someone else can help with this.

So now a new question. What do you want to do with this song? Usually when I bring in a midi file I end up keeping the melody, and let BIAB do the rest of the band. I use the original midi band parts to help me adjust or cipher the chords. With the chords in the chord sheet window, I then mute the original band parts. Unless you are trying to "capture" the bass or drum parts, this may be an approach for you. But, let us know what you are trying to do with this song and that will help.

This is an interesting discussion. I was not aware that any software existed that could make midi from wav. I have read a few articles that talk about separating stereo and trying to isolate, but they said that was not really very successful. I did do a Google search for amazingmidi and the cnet reviews are pretty mixed. I was actually surprised to see even that. Looks like this program has been out for a few years. You can download a trial version for free but there are limitations with it.

Sorry to digress from the OP's question.

Wouldn't it be easier to work with midi track separation in Real Band? Just asking....

it seems to work with with a limited number of instruments and as i said it removes the drums.
i am tying to create a backing track true to the original song so that i can play a transcribed original solo. obviously when i create a backing track using styles in biab and play a transcribed solo it never quite matches.

one problem is i only seem to be able to edit the note channel numbers one at a time.

but the main problem is adding a new drum part. i tried adding notes to the drum part they are there but don`t play back any ideas.

The ACW *can* create the fixed MIDI tempo for you. Then drums would become easier once a tempo map was in place.

I have a (weak) ACW tutorial video in the Tips section that shows how.. if the wav file plays along in tempo with the MIDI it created it just may work. Would be an interesting experiment.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

I think that you could edit the existing MIDI file and put it on different tracks and MIDI channels easier in Powertracks or RealBand.

i have just tried using real band to create a tempo map for the midi file but so far no luck.
i will keep trying.

for those of you coming just coming in on the discussion.-
the aim now is to create a tempo map for a midi file and then add drums to it without altering the original midi file in terms of style/chords. the midi file has not been created using acw. (basically, add drums to a midi file). i am sure someone must have tried this or done this already.

the suggestion is, as i understand it, to use the wave file in parallel with the midi file. some more coments would be helpful.

It works !
using a wav to midi file prog. and then using editable notation in biab i have removed the sax. and extracted the piano and bass parts out of a song to the melody and solo tracks respectively. Next i created a new wav file.
Now to replace the drums that are lost in the conversion from wav to midi file.
I imported the original wav file (complete song) to realband and created a tempo map (thanks rharv). Using this tempo map I added drums. I then brought the new wav file in (piano/bass) and ran acw again but just to give me beat 1 bar 1. I then lined up the two wav files. Lastly i removed the original wav file.
The result is i have the original song i wanted minus sax. to play a transcribed solo along to.

Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.
