Well... it really hasn't been a very good day. I bought a Roland JV-1010 synth a few years ago and loved it. For the money it was one of the best in it's class.
I got away from doing music for a few years and so the Roland just sat on my desk gathering dust. However, I got back the urge to start the music up again. I used to use Cakewalk but started finding it too time consuming having to do the bass and drum tracks especially. I then started hearing about BIAB and RB and so I did a lot of research on them. I decided to take the plunge and bought the UltraPac... it came last week. I couldn't wait to start music making.
The software and drivers for my Roland was out of date and so I got in touch with Roland and asked if I could get the new stuff I needed to start using it again. The guy responded and told me yes, I could get it - at a price of $35.00. I really didn't see any problem with that - in fact, I thought it was a fair price to pay.
The CD came in the mail today. I just put it in the computer and waited for it to start up and start installing. That's when my problems began. It turns out that the software I bought was the exact same as the old stuff I had. In fact, I downloaded the EXACT same stuff that was on the CD - for FREE. This isn't good because it is only for use with Windows 95 "and newer", meaning Windows 98. But that's where it stops. Drivers for Win XP were never developed or released. I was never told this and so I'm stuck with a great synth that I can't use anymore. I'm not about to start using Win 98 again. I emailed the guy at Roland right away to tell him this, hoping that I would get my $35.00 back but so far I haven't heard back from him. This is really starting to change my opinion about Roland.
What really p---ed me off was that the guy actually TOLD me that buying the CD would solve my problems. When I was on the phone with him I asked him if the synth was oblolete... he said no... it was just "discontinued", meaning that they weren't making it anymore, but it was still supported. Can you imagine???
And so, here I am... needing a synth but unable to afford one just after shelling out over $500.00 for the BIAB bundle I bought.
I've been hearing about "soft synths". My knowledge about them is next to nil but I'm guessing that they are synths in software form instead of exterior hardware like the JV-1010. If I were to start looking for some of this stuff, which one should I be looking at? I'm sure that one would be better than another. I'm looking for high quality sound - at an affordable price - if there is such a thing. Until I get something I'm stuck as far as putting any midi in my songs.
Like I said... I know absolutely NOTHING about this stuff and sure would appreciate any help from anyone who knows about it.

You don't need drivers for a MIDI synth.
Just a MIDI output on your computer.

All the Roland synths I have used required drivers, but only because they connected via USB.

Set the switch on the back of the JV1010 to MIDI, ignore the direct connect stuff and get a USB to MIDI converter for the puter.

The 1010, has midi in/out/thru, but no USB, so the software is for synth editting i assume, just plug a midi out cable to teh midi in on the synth and attach a pair of audio cable to the sound source and fire 'er up1

Wow... so much to learn, so many questions... and so much help from here.
I liked the idea of the USB to MIDI connector and so went looking for them. Here's a dumb question... the USB connection goes into the computer, one of the MIDI connectors goes into the 1010 and the other MIDI connector goes into my MIDI keyboard... am I right?
Another dumb question... once I get this all hooked up properly, will I be able to get the patch lists for the 1010? It has so many, it would be a drag if I couldn't see which instrument I wanted to use.

There's a patch map for the 1010 here- http://www.pgmusic.com/support_miscellaneous.htm..no charge <grin> You've already made up for the $35 with the help here.. Get a USB-to-MIDI adapter, connect the midi out of the computer to the midi in of the synth. Then connect an audio cable from the out of the synth to the soundcard line input.. good to go. If you want to control the synth with a different keyboard you can connect to the USB..as you said.
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Hi bobby, You MAY be able to run your JV1010 editor in XP’s Win 98 Compatibility mode. Check it out here.

Well... here's where I am at now...
I got my USB MIDI converter cable and I got the JV 1010 patch map... and did what the read me file said...
Put the ini file in your PT directory and rename it to
PATCHES.INI then when you start PT it should tell you it is
building a new PATCHES.BIN file.
I moved the ini file - and the rest of the files that are in the patch map into my Real Band directory - I'm not using PTPA... Real Band came with the UltraPac.
I had to rename the new ini file to "jvpatches" because there is already a file in the directory called "patches" and so it wouldn't let me use "patches" again.
After plugging everything in I opened Real Band... and it didn't do anything... it doesn't see the jv 1010 patch map. What could I be doing wrong?

The file MUST be named "patches.ini" in order to work.
1) First, locate the original "patches.ini" file in your RB folder and RENAME it to "oldpatches.ini" so that it will be there again if you ever need to revert.
2) Now, rename your custom patchmap to "patches.ini" and drop it into the RB folder, then start up RB. You should get the message that its loaded now.

I have a Roland JV1010. And a Ketron. Both work fine, just get a usb Edirol midi cable for the computer. To be honest the JV1010 has a knob so I do not hook mine to the computer. I use it to layer another sound into the mixer. You can preview sounds easily, and there is a patch map on the support website for band in a box.
The ketron has no knobs so I run it via the Edirol Midi cable in and out which lets me play the Ketron sounds on my keyboard using the Thru command at the top. You chose the instrument you want to play on your keyboard, run band in a box and bob is the proverbial brother to one of your parents.
The JV1010 for the age of the thing, is still a good synth. Mine is presently sitting on the floor beside me, hooked to a linux box. Works fine there. And Linux has about a millon bucks of free audio programs that you can get for free, free, free. Anyone who has not tried it and dowloaded a bunch of the programs should pick up one of those hundred buck terabyte usb drives, and get a magazine with Ubuntu in it at the store. Better have about 40 hours a day to play with all the great stuff. Before you install it remember to put Grub on your computer NOT on the hard drive or everytime you go to boot Windows you have to attach the hard drive and then select windows at which point you can detach the hard drive. Bit of a pain that.

I'm about to tear whatever hair I have left on my head out. I got the patch map working... thanks Mac. Now... I have my USB MIDI converter hooked up the way the instructions say... MIDI in = JV 1010. MIDI out = MIDI controler keyboard. And of course, USB into the computer. There's a little indicator light on the USB converter saying that the midi out is working as it flashes every time I press a key on the keyboard. But that's as far as it goes... the signal isn't going in to the JV 1010, thus no sound. Is there a setting somewhere? I'm running XP Pro and have an Audigy 2 sound card.

Bobby, you need to do some basic reading on midi, digital audio and related stuff. See the "Audiominds" link at the bottom of Mac's post? Click on that then click on "getting started" and start reading and following the links. If you can spend a few hours doing that this afternoon then come back to the forum, things will be a bit easier.
Also, when you see a reference to Power Tracks, that's Real Band now. All the tutorials still apply.

Where is the output of the JV1010 going.
Basic Trouble shooting would say put some earphones into the JV1010 and push the button in to hear the patch. And that thing has options make sure that the dial for Value (3rd on over) says GM and that the bottom led is on. You do that by pushing the knob in. Then set it at one and push the volume knob in and if you have earphones you should hear it go through a demo of the piano patch. Turn the Value knob to 17 and you hear an organ when pushing the volume knob in. Then try 25 and you hear a guitar.
Those are the same sounds as are going to come out the back.
On the back the slider should be set to Midi. You have 2 jacks on the back for left and right, mine then go to the mixer. I also run the keyboard to the mixer giving me two stero inputs into the mixer, this lets me run a beefed up sound when I want it. The mixer has output jacks and I take this to line in on the computer in the event I want to record audio. The computer audio can go either to adjacent line in jacks on the mixer OR to one of the channels on the mixer, depending on what you want to do with it.
The bottom line is if JV1010 is not hooked to computer and you use headphones you can ensure that it is working. IF you keep the headphones on and press the keyboard you should see a light flash every time and hear the sounds. Now fix where the sound is going because that is your problem.
And trust me I just did it with mine sitting beside me.
